On 8th February 1942 a Lysander III crashed near Highclere Castle. The pilot as T/Lt Tom Consitt and also on board was Air Fitter, Albert Henry George Clarke. Both were killed when their Lysander aircraft crashed into the bank whilst practicing shooting search lights.The Lysander III serial number V9630 was from 755 squadron at HMS Kestrel, Worthy Down.
