Scooby doo
What is it about our four legged friends that affects us so deeply? Perhaps it is the very obvious life lessons they teach us, not least to remember that each day is a good day and is best begun with a walk. Scooby doo was born here and named by my niece Marina. Like any proper Labrador, breakfast has always been a very important way to begin each day and, followed by morning ablutions, sets every day off to a good start. Dogs offer us comfort, uncritical love and company during our daytime routines.
As with our two legged friends, playtime often involves balls. Our own enthusiasms - tennis balls, golf balls, footballs, rugger balls, baseballs, whatever the shape or whether they are large or small, are something with which our canine friends can join in with: chasing balls, bringing them back, hiding them or simply careering off with them and refusing to bring them back. For them, it is just about sharing the fun.
Dogs love burying things and trying to find them again - their version of archaeology. They pretend to be interested when we're reading to them, they are very happy to be painted or photographed as long as a little treat of food or a tummy rub is involved. They love our walks, runs and bike rides and are very happy clambering hills. Many of them, labradors and spaniels in particular, also thoroughly enjoy a swim. Thus, for many of the aspects of life we find most enjoyable, they are with us and for us.
They are very kind and try to listen to us, pricking their ears attentively as if what we are saying is always both relevant and interesting. Their language skills are really rather good - they try their best to learn our speech and I try to learn theirs which is unspoken and therefore more subtle. They remind me how important body language can be, the look in their eyes, the tilt of their head and other small clues before listening to their spoken comments. They are remarkably empathetic, seeming to share our hopes and worries, getting up to offer a snuggle when we need it, or a quick lick - their version of a kiss. Most especially with labradors they like to share our food, from just tasting a fresh loaf (eating it all ) or snaffling unguarded roast chickens, the odd cheese plate, sandwiches or even simply an opportunistic dustbin. Scooby and his brother Alfie would even open Christmas presents and only trade them back in return for ham or cheese.
Sometimes, like our two-legged friends and family, they prefer to remain deaf to our entreaties because actually there is something else which is rather more important, often involving chasing the most delicious scent or the possibility of making a new friend.
It must be said that I do have rather a lot of dogs. I am not sure it was quite in Geordie‘s wish list to keep so many of each litter of puppies but each one is precious and full of love and specific characteristics. Some of them adore the shooting season and the sight of the old leather boots and caps means they are standing at the door determined not to be left behind. Others love to collect a ball and keep it and bring you a pressie of their comfy old blanket. They play with each other, lead each other astray and lie snoozing with each other.
As he grew older he would arrive back from his evening walk slowly but happily and find the best beds already taken. But I would talk to whoever was on his favourite bed to see if they would mind moving along so that Scooby could sit down. Unfailingly, they would uncurl themselves and get up to go and sit with someone else. Scooby would look at me with his kind dark eyes and potter across to lie down with a large sigh.
Sleep is alway important and unlike with people there is no screen time to contend with. A good nights sleep, sometimes with dreams so vivid that they twitch or even yip, is a matter of course for dogs. Every owner has different rules but ours sleep together downstairs except for Princess Evie, one of the spaniels, who does sleep with us.
Scooby doo collapsed however a few days ago - he was nearly 14 years old which for a Labrador is a good innings, nearly 100 years old in human terms. Geordie and I took him in to Carl the vet to say goodbye and to slip “ gently into that good night. ” Our love for and the knowledge of their love for us means that the loss and grief is so sharp yet uncomplicated. They do not ask much of us, just the essentials of life: love, good food, somewhere comfy to sleep and companionship in good times and bad. Lying beside him as he drifted away I could whisper to his soul that he could go now to join his brother Alfie and mother Bella.
I miss him sitting in all the winter puddles, rolling in the fallen leaves, a hundred places I have walked with him, the wagging tail and turning head with deep back eyes but for him it is perhaps a relief to be in some quiet place and he has only left the best memories.

I am so very sorry for your loss of Scooby Doo. I am a dog lover as well. They are family members and when they depart, there is a void. Grateful though for all the precious memories they leave in our hearts. 💕

We never have our four legged friends long enough. We can only be thankful for the time we have together. There is a special bond between dog and man. God named these beautiful animals after himself because they show us what real love is. I’m sorry for your loss.
I'm reading this with tears in my eyes, with my Westie and bestie, Maisy, at my feet. Dogs are truly our best friends and remind us daily to celebrate the moment, enjoy walks and sunshine, naps and treats. They give their love unconditionally. I try to be the best person, the one my dog thinks I am. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Da ich natürlich auch ein großer Fan von Downton Abbey bin u alle Filme u die gesamte Serie im TV gesehen habe, auch die vielen Dokumentationen über Highclere und die neuesten Vorhaben fand ich es besonders schön das auch Fotos aus den Filmszenen in den jeweiligen Räumen dargestellt wurden.

so sorry to hear about Scooby Doo. We said goodnight to our Labrador Hudson on Friday, he gave up walking a couple of weeks ago and stopped eating last week, so it was sadly time to say night night and God Bless. The hole they leave behind is painfully large, so I feel your grief with you. God bless you!

I lost my first Golden Retriever at 14. My second at 15 and 3 months. My current one is almost 10 and I tell him everyday:
“Tell mama you will never leave.” It brings such sadness and a hole in your heart. Take good care of yourself.

So sorry about Scooby. Our Jack, a Lab/German Shepherd/Chow mix, is almost 14, and it brings tears to my eyes to think that his time is coming, too. There is a wonderful book, "Will I See My Dog in Heaven?" by a Franciscan, Jack Wintz, which answer the question just as I would: Yes! Scooby will be waiting for you with great love.

Our first chihuahua would bark at the telly when certain politicians came on or were mentioned. (at least 15 years ago). Our more recent dog, Tammy, would pretend to die if you "shot" her. Adorable habits. Miss them both. Lady Carnarvon, condolences , on losing your labrador "Scooby"
I so enjoy your weekly posts, they are often the highlight of my Monday morning. Today's was especially special because like you I love our dogs. We, my wife and I, have been breeding, rearing, training and showing Shetland Sheepdogs for our entire sixty year marriage. We and the four still with us are in retirement now, just enjoying life and making our lives happier. As you can imagine, we have made the same trip to the vet's office many times and it hurts so much each time. We take solace in knowing that we gave them a good life, cared deeply about them, and tried very hard to make sure they were safe and knew we loved them. Please accept our condolences on the departure of Scooby Doo.
