Living with a film crew – again

Filming

Living with a film crew – again

4 min read
It was fourteen years ago that a certain film crew first rolled up to Highclere. They all tended to wear thick black jackets, dark jeans and practical trainers and boots. Opening lots of castle windows to run in thick black cables, closing doors and calling for silence “rolling”, they complain how cold it is but, despite such privations, they are here once more, not for a series but for another film. There are so many important questions to contemplate - which of your favourite characters will be back? What style of clothes do you think Lady Mary be will wearing? Hopefully Cora and Robert Grantham will be united in continued strength again and, Mrs Patmore will be busy cooking, but for what occasion? What life choices will Thomas make? That part of the story in the second film that was left to lure us onwards: will the glamour of Hollywood entice? How will the story of Bates and Anna develop? From Highclere’s point of view, we have been very busy with rounds of recces, now followed by the arrival of white vans, large unit base trailers, lots of black out material as well as corex and boards to protect the floors. The old labradors have already remembered the form with delight: catering trucks which make lots of delicious snacks, just the sort of things they love for breakfast and for lunch. But there is even more: trestle tables with biscuits and sandwiches around tea time. Alfie is quite often missing and usually deaf to all calls, found by catching sight of the end of his tail under a table. So much to look forward to and they will undoubtedly show the puppies the way. Geordie was up early this morning to let the Downton team in to set up and, is hoping for an absence of palm trees which used to catch him with their sharp fronds as he was struggling with a Castle shutter. John the Castle manager has been walking round even more than usual whilst Luis and I prefer the later shifts as we take a more relaxed approach to morning schedules. The excellent coffee caterer here during the last film has arrived back this morning, so I am happy. Whichever part the various members of the crew play in creating a film, the days are long with cast in hair and makeup from the early hours and lighting and cameras put in place before any rehearsals for the first scene take place from about 8.30am. There is always a plan in advance for each day for which rooms they are in, how it is going to work that day, where all the directors and computer screens are, where the green room is and so on. Each day is both very busy and very still. Everyone rushes around and then you hear shouts of “silence” when everything stops and a scene is rehearsed, fine-tuned until finally ready to shoot……. for the first take. As well as filming inside, some days – weather willing – will hopefully be spent outside around the lawns, on the paths and around the park. I still find it fascinating, turning short typed lines on a small piece of white thumbed paper into three dimensional characters with energy and lives shared on screens large and small. It is a huge team effort beginning with the writer, Julian Fellowes, to endless production and budgeting teams, then teams on the ground and finally the cast. It is a leap of imagination and faith and all of it irresistible. In this fragile world I hope that Downton Abbey offers all of us a world apart and time out. Thank you to all the teams who make it possible.

Good morning
Lady Carnarvon
Hello and excitement from the Central Coast of California!
Years older and looking forward to a great story from Downton Abbey.
Thank you for this exciting news.
I have this wonderful series in my head!
I had all the dvds and let a dear friend who was died from ALS borrow them. I never could go back to retrieve the set. I do have the last two movies and will if course purchase this one!
Hopefully you will keep us fans of DA in the loop without giving too much information.

I am soooo happy to hear that there is going to be another film! Downton Abbey became my escape during years of raising children, and the characters feel like old friends.

I made your acquaintance at one of your Downton Teas some years ago, and I love hearing about the comings and goings of your beautiful estate. What an amazing world you live in!

Thanks for sharing,

If I didn't believe it before, I will believe it now: Downton Abbey will be back. If fans have not thanked you before for enduring the inconveniences of filming, do know that without your beautiful home in the starring role, there really would be no Downton Abbey.
As always I will be keen to see what dishes will be prepared by kitchen staff to share with fellow foodie fans.

Oh Lady Carnarvon, I am not one to be envious but to be fair on most days I do envy you entrusted with looking after that amazing house although I appreciate that is not a task for the faint hearted but today that has increased tenfold. Downton Abbey has to be thee most exquisite escapism ever. I have watched it all at least 8 times. It’s my go to comfort viewing. If I am sick, sad, whatever I am feeling. It has the wonderful air of familiarity and warmth. So while I do envy you on a daily basis. Today you have made my day also…. A new Downton film, I can’t wait.

Oh I am so excited for another season of Downton Abbey. It is even more fun to hear your descriptions of what is going on behind scenes. We live vicariously through you. Thanks for allowing your beautiful home and estates to be used as I know it can be a hindrance for you and the estate.

The magic of Downton is its ability to span countries, cultures, and socioeconomic divides to draw us all in to the story. I am so grateful to be able to enjoy the trials, tribulations & triumphs of the characters, above AND below stairs....as no life is without all of these pieces regardless of whether or not one is "to the manor born".

And anchoring everything is Highclere with its unique ability to draw you in & make you feel like you are home.....

A resounding thank you to Lady Carnarvon & Lord Carnarvon for the leap of faith that opened Highclere's doors leading to its firm establishment in our hearts.

This is very exciting news and looking extremely forward to the finished film. Love to you all and always grateful for our Connections.

My mom would be so excited. I don’t know if they show movies in heaven, not likely but if they did, I’m pretty sure Downton Abbey would be a hit.!!☺️

I trust you are well and I belated happy Mother’s Day to you. In Canada, we celebrated yesterday, which of course was hard since mom just went to be with the Lord just five weeks ago. It’s still difficult to accept that she is not here but with each passing day we are learning to adjust.

I want to say thank you again for being so kind and loving to my mother when we stayed at the castle. As you can imagine her time with you was such a beautiful moment and memory for her. I will be eternally grateful for what the Lord did in and through you during our stay.
Thank you so very much for everything.
Love and appreciate you,
Tressa

So many questions! Will we see O'Brien again? Will Anna have another baby? Will Daisy have a baby? Will Mrs. Patmore?!?!? ;)
Where's Shrimpie? Will Susan, Braithwaite and Sara Bunting each be run over by a bus (several times)? Will we ever meet Aunt Agatha?

Whatever the storyline I'm sure it will be another delight!

Lady Carnarvon,
I am happy to know that another story of Downton Abbey is about to be created. My husband and I “owe” our trip to England and Highclere Castle to a fundraiser by our local Public Broadcasting Service’s showings of Downton Abbey where the trip to England and your beautiful home was available. I was on the phone for details immediately, and we were on the Highclere grounds 6 months later! That was ten years ago, and as an Anglophile all my adult life, I await the new movie with great expectations.
Thank you for ‘lending’ your home during the filming!
May you and Geordie enjoy the rest of Spring and Summer!

Dear Lady Carnarvon: Another Downton Abbey film, I"M SO EXCITED. In fact, I'm currently watching the entire series as we speak. I was planning to visit Highclere this July, but just found out last week that my tour company has cancelled my trip to London due to lack of participation. Unfortunately, I'll now have to wait until next year because I'm having right ankle replacement surgery, and recuperation time is three months (what a bummer). I added on three extra day's to my London trip so that I could visit Highclere. I did visit London about 20 years ago, but realize there was so much I didn't get to see and I'm not getting any younger. I guess it's for the best, because my ankle is giving me a lot of difficulty, and at least, of course if everything goes okay, I'll be able to complete my tour without this horrible pain. I'm trying to be okay with this, but I must admit it's hard. I want to visit where Downton Abbey was filmed so bad. I know I won't be disappointed.

I'm sure having a film crew in your home can be a little (or a lot) exhausting, but just keep thinking how happy it's going to make your fans here in America feel. We're addicted.

Have a wonderful day, and just keep thinking how happy you'll be making so many people feel.

Ohhhh..... so so SO excited for this!! I can't bear the thought of an "end" being nigh though. I know it's upheaval for you all, but in the best abd most exciting way I'm sure. I hope we get to see more menus and stunning dinners from Mrs Patmore. My Scottish Granny was a Cook in service, so this gives me a living, breathing insight into her daily life back in the very early days of the1900s. Thank you so much Lord & Lady Carnarvon for sharing your home with the world; for many it's only through Downton. I am hoping to make it for a visit prior to October when my family leave our shores for good as I am desperate to see the Egyptian Exhibition and hopefully meet all of your gorgeous Labbies .

I have all of the Downton Abbey books and all the Highclere Castle books. I am a big fan as are millions of others. I look forward to seeing the next movie but I hope it to be the last. I don’t want to delve into the past and I don’t want to stretch into the future. Some things of high quality should be left alone, like a fine wine or a piece of timeless music. Relish in your senses what has come to an end.
If something new is desired, start back in the early 1700’s.
Anyway, enough rambling on.
Lady Carnarvon, I love your books and recipes. Hopefully some day I will be able to visit your beautiful home.
Thoughtfully,
Janice Guth

It is with great anticipation that we await a new film and/or new season of Downton Abbey. It almost feels like family. In this crazy world, I try to end my day with a few scenes from DA rather than hear the local news before bedtime. How I'd love Denker to make me a hot chocolate before bedtime...but even better with a bit of rum chata in it! Or perhaps some Highclere Gin! Cheers!

Fascinating to hear how the filming all works. I have been watching Downton again from the start so I will be all up to date before the next film comes out. It is still such a great drama with so many twists and turns. It is just so interesting. Absolutely love seeing your beautiful home highlighted. We toured in 2019 and enjoyed your gorgeous home and the gardens. Thank you for sharing your home.

So excited that they are filming another round! The story has been an exciting one and it lets us "live" at Highclere for a little while. I was able to visit your lovely home back in 2015 and I have never forgotten the feel of the rooms and the lawn, with several pictures on "the bench".

Thank you for allowing them to disturb your home and schedule for filming. For those of us in America, we don't get to London as often as we would like and this allows us to "visit".

Thank you, Lady Carnarvon. This is something to look forward to. As you said, it is a welcome diversion. I know it is also good news for Highclere. I remember you telling us that the initial income helped put a new roof on the Castle. I think it is wonderful.
Will you ever host another event like Heros at Highclere? My husband and I made the trip to England to attend the last one. We were first in line to check in. As a Vietnam Veteran this event was very meaningful to him. Maybe there could be an event focused on all of the Vietnam Veterans. It is the 50 year anniversary.

Hi Lady Canarvon
I so can not wait for this next film i have watched every episode and both films.
I visited Highclere in march and was joined by my 2 very good friends and my mum, we all love Downton Abbey and it has been on our wish list to visit since the very first episode. So when i saw that National Holidays did 2 day trips and Downton Abbey was on their list we decided it was a definate must so i booked and May i say it was an amazing weekend for us and so wonderful to visit your home where Downton Abbey is actually filmed a home to which may i say we all found very stunningly beautiful and the gardens are amazing. May i say whilest we were taking in the beauty of the dining room on our tour it was so wonderful for you to greet us with your presence and give a talk all about the filming of Downton Abbey and the history of the paintings on the wall this was just the topping on the whole day to atually meet you, and more special for my friend and my mum who were celebrating their birthdays. We all had the most amazing time and my mum said it was the best present i could of got her, an experience we will never forget. Thank you Lord and Lady Canarvon for opening the doors to your most stunningly beautiful home.xx

Whilst having the film crew in Highclere again creates such disruption to your already hectic lives, it’s so exciting for all of us. The prospect of another Downton Abbey movie conjures up thoughts of how Julian Fellowes has evolved the wonderful characters we’ve grown to love.
Having been to Highclere last year, I can clearly see the picture the film crew in action. Oh and how Alfie must look forward to his snacks. Such a super Highclere family member. I hope he continues to enjoy each and every production day.

How lovely and very generous of you to open your home and your hearts to the creative craziness that is film making. I am perhaps presumptuous to say that every viewer is in your debt for allowing such an important piece of history that Highclere represents, to give us all the sumptuous scenery (serving as backdrops,) to such masterful storylines. I look forward to entering your home and gardens again, if only through the lens of a camera.
Thanks you again for your generosity, and warm personality that shines through your words.

This has made my year and this movie will be so highly anticipated by so many of us. It was exciting to see everyone sign on to do this movie as many of us are completely invested in the characters and their lives on the show. I hope there’s lots of focus on the relationships of couples and people both downstairs and upstairs this time around.

Thank you for opening your magnificent home to make this happen. The house is its own star in the show and all of us are forever grateful that you share it and your appreciation for this lovely phenomenon we call Downton Abbey!
Love and thank you from Atlanta,GA USA

Oh, my, this is the best news! I remember being disappointed at the end of season one because l did not know more seasons were to come and we were left with a cliff hanger. I am now enjoying the same anticipation I felt waiting for the next season, then, the next movie. What a story, what a cast, what a backdrop.
I visited and loved the Downton costume and sets exhibits as they came Biltmore Estate in our North Carolina. But, l am FINALLY visiting Highclere in July and am so excited it will be on the heels of Downton’s final production. I hope to soak up that elegant Downton era vibe.
“Ya’ll” have been wonderful hosts.
PS Love your posts and blogs, Lady Carnarvon. You are so relatable.

Lady Carnarvon ........Sorry for the late post tonight. I've been preparing for a fishing trip to Alaska all day. If you have too much rain you could sent some to western Canada. This early in the season and they are already burning up. Hopefully all in the wake of the fires stay safe.
Wonderful to hear confirmation of the new Downton Abbey movie. There are so many loose ends that could be tied up in this movie. How many week are they anticipated for filming? Any special plans around Highclare for revenues from the movie? Thank you for the great news.

Oh my! I’ve got tears of happiness in my eyes! So thankful you’ve opened your home once again so we can all catch yet another glimpse of the Crawley family! I toured Highclere with a friend in 2022, and while we didn’t meet you, we did meet the charming Luis! He was out on the lawn the day we arrived, offering a sip of your wonderful gin (now my favorite hostess gift when attending dinner parties here in the United States). So looking forward to Winter 2025!

Lady Carnarvon,
I’ve just read almost all of the 252 comments! This must be a record number reflecting your hundreds of readers who, like I, are not only adoring fans of Downton Abbey and Highclere, but who clearly await another amazing story by you every Monday morning, or whenever they receive it!!
You are truly a popular writer as well as a person who cares so much to capture the dreams and memories of those who have seen beautiful Highclere as well as those who have ‘lived’ through Downton Abbey.
I am so grateful to be a part of both.
Thank you for giving so much time of yourself to others.
Blessings!

I love reading about the behind-the-scenes activities. I'm sure it's exciting and exhausting. I love Downton Abbey, but I've been in love with Highclere Castle since I was in high school 50 years ago and read about the discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamun. I hope to visit Highclere someday. Thank you for making it feel like home to all of us armchair travelers.

We had the pleasure of visiting your home on the 6th of May. (From SC) It was an incredible day. Rainy but incredible! The blend of seeing a filming location of a favorite series with a lovely family home with your family memories and touches was a unique and memorable experience. Thank you for making the experience available . And thank you for having the main character “Highclere Castle” return for another Downton adventure!

My husband and I were privileged to visit Highclere in June of 2022 before our son was born. Imagine our surprise when we entered the house (slightly late) to find you, Lady Carnarvon, addressing the group and answering questions. I had listened to many episodes of your podcast and felt like I was getting to finally hear the vocal overtones of a long-time friend. We had just driven to Birmingham the evening before to watch the second Downton Abbey film, so the characters and storylines were fresh in our minds as we wandered the beautiful place.

About a decade before, I had been a seatfiller at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. When the cameras weren’t rolling, Michelle Dockery handed me her phone and asked me to take a photo of her and her cast-mates, who included Phyllis Logan, Sophie McShera, Allen Leech, and Amy Nuttall. How star-struck I was! They went on to win the award that evening for Best Cast, and your divine pal Phyllis Logan took to the mic to accept.

I just started rewatching the series for the umpteenth time and could not be more thrilled to learn the third film is under way!

Dear Lady Carnarvon,

You made my day with this fantastic news! Highclere Castle is the main character in this amazing show and I can't wait to see the next chapter. That said, it will be bitter-sweet not to see Maggie Smith among the cast this time. Just as all families must do when a family member passes on, we must continue our lives. I'm so glad to see that Downton Abbey and its cast of characters also continues.

It should not go unnoticed the imposition filming at Highclere Castle has on you and your family, and the Highclere staff. The "Downton Abbey fandom" are very grateful to you for the endless accommodations you've made these past several years to bring us this show that's set in your home. Downton Abbey wouldn't be the same if took place elsewhere.

Best wishes from San Jose, California.

I have often wondered how Downton was heated. There are scenes of Mary walking down the stairs, in winter, with a sleeveless dress and no shawl. It must have been incredibly cold. Was this artistic licence or were there fires in hallways/corridors to keep scantily clad ladies warm?

Lady Carnarvon,

I was delighted to learn today that Downton Abbey has been already filming the
third film. (I asked my husband if he had known, and his response was a yes. I don't think he is as much as a fan). The wonderful thing about your blogs is learning what goes on behind the scenes, and especially that the dogs love it so much. We will all be looking forward to the next one, without Dame Maggie Smith of course. Thank you for making all this possible as far as the beautiful location goes.

I am so very happy there is another movie!
I started watching in 2011 on American PBS when I was very sick and stranded at home in Montreal for a long time. I bought all the DVD's to watch the different making of, for every seasons. It was my confort series for a long time and still is. I am rewatching on Netflix now and then when I am feeling a bit low.

In 2021, I had the fabulous chance to visit England and one of my first visit was for Highclere Castle, on the day of my 60th birthday. On top of the visit, there was a conference from the nice lady who owns the Manor in the tv series Poldark, which I later discovered and liked a lot. I bought lots of mementos in the boutique, which remind me of this wonderful trip. I stayed at The Carnavon Arms a few days, such a lovely area. I also went to see the first movie in Oxford and went on a second visit to the Castle a few days later, having the chance to see the Egyptian exhibition this time. I completed my visit with a couple of days around Brampton village, the park at Lady Violet's house, and later took the lovely train in Sussex to see the station where so many memorable scenes were filmed. I loved all of this trip centered mostly around Downton Abbey.

All that to say thank you for letting the crew and cast invading your Castle, yet another time. I am so looking forward to watch the next movie. Mille mercis from a French Canadian.

Thank you for this wonderfully written tribute. We cannot wait to visit Highclere again (from NY) in October. We will be attending the WW2 & D-Day Festival on 5 October (we bought the evening VIP package - cannot wait!). About how long are they usually at Highclere filming for a movie? Thank you Lady Carnarvon for allowing another film crew in your beautiful home. We all loved the series and 2 films. Can't wait for the next one. You and Georgie are so generous to allow filming again. Thank you, thank you, thank you.!!!

Wow! What a great news!
Can’t wait until next Winter!!!
But maybe a few months later, because we need to prepare subtitles in Japanese.........

Dear Lady Carnarvon

Such FABULOUS news to know that there is going to be a 3rd film. Winter 2025 seems a long way off at the moment but I'm sure it'll be here in no time. Meantime I'm sure I'll be watching the series and the first two films again and again!!
Heartfelt thanks to you and your family for allowing this to happen in your home - it must be quite the upheaval. My friends and I are fairly "obsessed" with Downton and become so immersed that the characters are almost "friends".
Hope to visit one day.

Lady Carnarvon,
I am. So. Excited! I loved the Downton Abby series and films. The cast must love them, too, since they are willing to once again don their costumes and get into Downton Abby character. I’ll be watching for updates on the film!

Dear Lady Carnarvon,
We returned from our England /Ireland/Scotland vacation and by far our most memorable day was our visit to Highclere for the film special on April 17th. Thank you for welcoming us into your home. It is a gorgeous estate and we felt right at home. I can’t wait to visit again!

I am so excited both for you and Highclere Castle, and for the actors and the viewers - like me - who have been waiting for a new Downton film. Bravo!

My grandson Connor Williams was at Highclere for the filming of Top Chef. He was on the construction crew, got to meet you and spoke of how gracious you were. Love Downton Abby!

We visited this past Sunday on opening day for the summer. Actually we delayed flying back to the states by a day just so we could visit! My high expectations were far exceeded! We had such a lovely day!

So now I have an event suggestion :) A game of Edwardian Upstairs/Downstairs where we all get to dress up and role play for the day. I'd pay good money to be silly and transported to another time for the day :)

Oh, and plain scones in the cafes. Raisins ruin everything :)>
