When the sun is shining and there’s a gentle breeze, the drive into the Castle makes it appear an almost magical dream world: a quintessential England, rolling down hill and past dale, green pastures on either side dotted with sheep.
We all dream and daydream: our unconscious thoughts, feelings and desires swirling around in contrast to the ordered processes which characterize so much of our daily lives. Indeed, my mother’s standard recommendation was always cheerily to advise my sisters and me to sleep on something at moments of crisis or indecision in the belief that a good night’s sleep would help us find our way through.
Most of those who work here live close by and they always comment that one of the aspects of their job they enjoy the most, is that it is the most beautiful commute, almost whatever the weather is doing. That twice a day, every day, they get to sweep down the driveway into this magical landscape.
For many of them, it is more a way of life than a job – a “living the dream” choice more than a commercial one. Paul, one of visitor team, always claims that he comes every day not so much to work as to play, that it is his “dream” job and quite often he tips up to help out even on the days he is not officially on duty.
Visitors often write in to say Highclere is their “dream” holiday trip and that coming here is on their bucket list. It is a treat for mothers and daughters, a special day out for a husband to give his wife, a romantic location for a marriage proposal, a convivial meeting place for friends. It leaves visitors with memories, smiles and thus new dreams.
In one newspaper I read that Highclere came out on top as the place people dream of staying. Of course that dream is partly made possible by staying in one of our two lodges which are charming, quirky and a world apart.
John, the Castle Manager, has the best view from his office window and, in the office, next door a fabulous team of very competent women. He also has a nice line in finely judged irony. Whenever matters get stressed (and we seem to have been more than usually busy lately), I always ask him if he is doing ok. “Living the dream, Lady Carnarvon, living the dream” is his invariable reply, the subtext of that reply meaning that his inbox is out of control. To cheer him up I might hide behind a pillar as he exits in order to make him jump, but the last time I waited patiently, he had unfortunately seen me and came from another door with a megaphone to relay very loudly that I was caught out.
Justine says she has found her dream job, Sally in the gift shop said how lucky she felt to be part of the team, I assume Pat finds it dreamy as she has been here for over 60 years and there are few better sights than Les appearing at the very young age of 92. Gift shop Ann has just retired at 82 although she is rather young!
Yesterday evening three of our team returned from playing football together on a local pitch to find the drive inside the park gates completely blocked by sheep. At 11pm therefore, in the summer darkness, we all became shepherds, looking at each other, smiling. Fred inched his car forward at the top of the park entrance to push them down the drive. Arms akimbo we blocked the crossroads to turn them along a narrower drive, with my husband ‘s car blocking them to turn them back into a field. Luckily they began to follow each other, calling loudly in different notes and tones. The stream of sheep seemed wonderfully endless. It turned out there were about 500, and it certainly all took some time, but at the same time it was rather magical standing in the gloaming before checking all the gates were shut and then turning in ourselves, counting sheep, of course, to fall asleep. Just living the dream…….
Our recent visit for the Downton Abbey concert and post reception was a dream come true Lady Carnarvon. We are deeply grateful to you, Lord Carnarvon and your wonderful team for an experience we’ll never forget!
It was an absolutely wonderful evening.
Never have I felt living vicariously through the life of anyone…until Downton Abbey introduced me to Highclere Castle and you, Lady Carnarvon. It’s literally living a dream or dreaming a lifestyle. May God continue to bless you all….and thank you for such a beautiful blog today…it certainly must be splendid working with/for you and Lord Carnarvon.
You are too kind.
Alba Bryan – you took the words right out of my mouth! 🙂
I couldn’t agree more with you!♥️
Out of all the places I’d love to visit someday in England, Highclere is at the top of the list. It’s history and beauty is incredible. Thank you for sharing it with the world. My husband and I look forward to visiting in the near future.
You must come and visit!
What a great way to begin the day by reading your Monday morning posts! You always paint the most visual pictures with your stories and I imagine being right there. Love the ending! Couldn’t be more perfect.
Get a full place to work and live. Keep up the great job of preserving this historical landmark. Lady Carnarvon you are inspiration to all who see your blog
Thank you
Thanks again for sharing the dream with us. You are such a talented writer, I always feel as if I’m right there with you! God bless!
It certainly was “living the dream” for me when I visited back in April and I also had that magical moment when I first spotted the castle in the distance, after having waited so long to visit! Thank-you for opening up your beautiful home to allow people like me and my mother to have a day we will never forget!
So glad you and your mother enjoyed your visit.
How blessed you are to call this place home.
A big responsibility, but oh how it must be worth it!
England at it’s past and present… and future.
I hope to visit someday and have that thrill of coming up that drive.
Your pictures are lovely❤️
Please do come and visit
It would be my dream to visit there at some time! It’s so beautiful and peaceful!
It is a remarkable place, you feel as if you are walking through time.
Lady Carnarvon,
As soon as the local Public Broadcast Station at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill announced during their fundraiser in the Spring of 2013 that reservations were being taken for a trip to “Downton Abbey” in October, I actually ran into my husband’s office and said, “Guess where we’re going in October!” He had not watched the popular show at that time, but I was a devoted fan. Fast forward, we were a part of a bus group of about forty who peered through the bus windows to see your marvelous home, Highclere Castle.
Thank you and Lord Carnarvon so much for making our dream come True!
Martha Glass
We are always so pleased to see guests from PBS fundraisers, such a worthy cause and such lovely, generous people.
Sounds like a very peaceful, beautiful life.
It is, interspersed with moments of high drama and hard work.
We visited Highclere last year. It was wonderful.
Thank you.
Dear Lady Carnarvon
Thank you for introducing your staff – 60 years of service is testiment to more than job satisfaction. It speaks for a love for the venue and community. Best wishes to all at Highclere. Are you all interested in the Tennis? Kindest regards.
I absolutely love tennis and will be gripped by the finals this weekend.
Highclere was indeed on my bucket list until September 2014 when I and a group of friends made the trip across the Atlantic to England. We planned a 12-day vacation around Highclere, the #1 goal for all of us. I will never forget the experience. The magic of seeing it in the distance for the first time, walking up the drive to the huge front doors, and everything beautiful inside and out. My absolutely favorite thing in the castle is the green silk wallpaper. I was mesmerized by the richness and beauty of it. London, Paris, then Rome – all beautiful, but all hinged on a trip to the castle. Truly a dream come true for all of us. Memories for a lifetime.
The Drawing Room silk is a beautiful shade of green and the light from the south facing windows makes it a lovely, restful room. SO glad you enjoyed your visit.
!!!!
Such a sweet story!! We have visited twice from Canada and really hope for a third…such a beautiful estate. Love your blogs!
Thank you
That is a wonderful thing in life to do work that makes you feel that you are “Living The Dream”. Another saying that brings to mind is “It doesn’t get better than this”. Thank you for a very enjoyable blog. It makes me feel
I am visiting again.

Thank you
I loved your final paragraph about the sheep Lady Carnarvon (not for the fact that they got out!) but that it brings back memories of my memorable visit to your home back in May. I was standing in the field below the Airman tree sculpture, watching and listening to your sheep down in the dale. There was a lamb that had become separated from it’s momma. It was calling loudly out until the 2 were reunited. In your last photo it looks as though all those little lambs from back in May have sure grown up!
The weather has been perfect for growing lush, green grass and they have all eaten their fill.
My husband and I and four friends from USA will be visiting the castle on Sunday July 21, 2019. We are beyond excited as the time grows nearer for us to “live the dream”. This has been a trip that was a long time coming. It’s a long way to travel but we are sure it will be worth it. Thank you Lady Carnarvon for allowing us the chance to be living the dream!
We look forward to welcoming you to Highclere.
Sounds like you need a Border Collie or two!
The shepherd does have a couple of wonderful collies but matters were pressing and we only had people and cars so we did our best with what we had!
Visiting Highclere Castle, working there…all part of the dream! Blessings to you today, Lady Carnarvon.
Thank you
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
On Sunday the 29th Sept my husband and I will be “living the dream” when we will be fortunate enough to be at your beautiful castle on our 40th wedding anniversary. When we were first planning our trip over from Australia the date was not yet available but it came up and we could not believe our luck so we are counting the days now and can’t wait to be there we are also going to see the movie as well.
Love reading your blog and also the books you have written.
Kind regards
Narelle
What a fabulous way to celebrate. We look forward to welcoming you in September.
My dear ladyCarnarvon,
What did your mother mean when she advised in times of crisis “sleep on something” ? something sweet ?
I am living the dream that one day I can visit your home. We always cross on QM 2. arriving Southampton circa 13 September. and you are always closed by that time…..my dream is that we can sail earlier or you will be open later.
Sandie Carpenter. Whitefish, MT.
We do have some special tours starting on 14th September this year so perhaps you can come this autumn https://highclerecastleshop.co.uk/categories/special-guided-tours.
Good morning from way over here!
I love seeing your blog in my inbox on Monday morning, and this one just went to the top of my favorites list! Sheep blocking the driveway…that’s just such an enchanting image. (Although it probably wasn’t completely enchanting getting through…)
The view from Heaven’s Gate IS magical – thank you for posting that photo!
You are a wonderful storyteller and the perfect Lady for Highclere. (Especially if you can chuckle about that megaphone trick!)
Sincerely,
Joan Lerch

You are too kind.
Hello Lady Carnarvon, When will you start offering cooking school trips? I came to Highclere last October with the group of 12 cooking school ladies passing through from London to Lucknam Park, and we spoke of you offering this type of tour in the near future! Please let me know when!
That is a wonderful idea! We might do something around my forthcoming book ‘Christmas at Highclere – recipes and traditions from the real Downton Abbey’
Ahhh my dream would be to just someday visit, and stroll around the grounds blissfully happy to be there. Thank you for your lovely descriptions of life at Highclere!
You should come, there are plenty of strolls to be had.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
An apposite quote from a remarkable woman.
Beautiful place…..thanks for sharing with us each week!
My husband and I from Virginia will be visiting you in December through Viking River Cruise extension. We are so excited to be there around the holidays. So fun to have a “dream” come true!
We always enjoy welcoming our friends from Viking Cruises here at Highclere and this Christmas we hope the Castle will be extra magical.
Being at Highclere is a dream come true. After my visit in April, 2015, I find myself often reliving the dream and hoping to return one day soon. There is truly a “magic” at Highclere, and it might just be from the wonderful spirit of welcome and hospitality that you and Lord Carnarvon, and all your wonderful staff, bestow upon us mere “visitors”. We are made to feel as if we are one-of-the-family…as if Highclere is our home. And through your writing, in your books and here every Monday, you allow us to live the history, the events, the moments of joy, moments of sorrow : the life of Highclere. Thank you foe letting us “live the dream”, too!
You are very kind. We do what we can to share with as many people as possible.
Good Morning Lady Carnarvon:
I finally got to “Live the Dream” when we visited your lovely home on June 13th. It was raining but it didn’t dampen our joy! Our tour guide, Alison O’Toole, was charming and had plenty of tales to tell. As the only Canadians in our group, we were quite proud of our first Prime Minister’s connection to Highclere! Your home is beautiful and we enjoyed hearing about the filming of Downton Abbey and seeing many of the rooms we have seen on the show. We noticed a painting missing from the wall in one of the photographs of the show and wondered if it was removed because it was historically inaccurate for the time period of Downton Abbey? We also enjoyed our time chatting with the ladies in the gift shop (and purchasing lovely keepsakes) and I was going to say Sarah was so much fun but now I am questioning whether it was Sally? (In my excitement, my brain was in overdrive). We came to retrieve our purchases that we bought prior to the tour and Sally said she remembers people by their hands and she had a funny story about that. The food we had was beyond delicious and I even spotted your dogs for a moment which gave me a thrill. I was going to take more photos of Highclere when we left so there would be no people in the shot but alas, there was a delivery van parked in front and it just didn’t look quite right with a van in the photo. Thank you for opening your home for a few dates in June or we would not have been able to see your wonderful home and enjoy the food, scenery, stories, your staff and the Egyptian Exhibit. The only thing missing was YOU! We were treated like Royalty and the experience was definitely “Living the Dream!” Sincerely,
Catherine
I too was fascinated by the connection with Canada, and I found it purely by chance whilst reading some of the 19th Century guestbooks. So glad you enjoyed your visit here.
I always feel at peace when I visit the castle, I applied for a job once even though I am in the US. Unfortunately it was already filled, I would have packed my bags and got the next flight to the UK if I had gotten the job. There is no other place I would do that for, Highclere Castle and all the lovey people there are very dear to my heart and always will be.
How very kind you are.
You write so beautifully! I feel like I am there and one day, I hope to be able to visit your beautiful home!
Please do!
What a delightful way to start my day–thank you for all of your blog posts, but this one was a particular delight. Wishing you a dreamy week!
Thank you – and you too!
I appreciate all the dedication and hard work you are doing to keep this amazing and historic place alive.
It takes talent to juggle so much responsibility with so much grace and flair.
Hats off to you and your incredibly dedicated staff!
I’m not sure I always demonstrate grace and flair but we have a wonderful team here and we tend to cope well with most challenges.
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Living the dream indeed! I’m certain everyone who has the pleasure of being at Highclere every day are truly thankful to be there. The beauty of the estate and camaraderie shared by all speaks volumes revealing what a grand and glorious place it is. Thank you for your weekly blog and for letting us step back in time with you as you share majestic Highclere life with us.
My husband and I look forward to being there! We will see you in a few months.
Have a great week!
Mary
I look forward to it!
Love the sheep story as I grew up around sheep and herded them many times. I think you could have a hundred miles of fencing with one small hole and they would quickly find it. The sheep lady from Colorado.
You are completely right – they are escapologists.
I really got lost in the dream of being at Highclere this morning along with a splendid cup of coffee — I didn’t want your words to end — my chores for the day are waiting for me. Thanks for the respite — I’ m back to reality!
Reality awaits us all at some point of the day.
I got little shivers on first glimpse of the castle coming up the the drive with my tour group from Iowa. Part of it was the thrill of seeing it for the first time and part was realizing I was actually there. It was beautiful even in the rain and I also remember lots of sheep. My big regret is that I live too far away to easily attend your lovely events.
The Castle is magical in any weather, but especially on a misty day.
It’s been a year since my best friend and I spent the day at Highclere. Texans, we had arrived several days before our tour began to embark on the pilgrimage to enjoy beautiful Highclere. It was the highlight of our two weeks. Your blog this morning captured the wonder and magic. Thank you.
I will be at Highclere on a tour July 15th. It is a dream come true. I’m an old lady of 88 from Jackson,MS.
I really hope you enjoy your visit
You are absolutely right! I visited Highclere last summer with my mom and sister, and it was a trip of a lifetime for all of us. I describe it to people, like going to my mecca. It was so magical and we definitely want to come back soon. That would be a dream job to work there!
Whenever I have trouble falling asleep I think about our wonderful trip to HIghclerc and imagine my self there once again! It helps me in a marvelous way to quickly fall asleep and soon I am “living the Dream!” Thank you once again for the beautiful words in your blog and for taking the time to write each week!
As always, a very lovely story! I look forward to next Monday!
Dearest Lady Carnarvon,
Oh, I enjoyed this post. I find the sheep to be so calming. They are decidedly British! When we have seen them in the fields there, I have noticed different colored blotches on them. Is that a means of identification? I love the picture you posted.
I have an entire Highclere Board on Pinterest. That way I can go back and take a look if I am trying to remember something I saw previously. I find it very helpful.
I had to laugh at your telling about ‘living the dream’. Here in Florida we say that frequently when asked how we are. Tourists seem to think everyone here is on vacation, so we should all be ‘living the dream’ every day. Truth is, life happens no matter where we live. It is not always easy. But we are grateful for every day God gives us!
I pray BLESSINGs upon you and Lord Carnarvon and your entire team. I too, would move there just to work at Highclere….I just love it there! You do have a wonderful team.
Sue Smith
Englewood, Florida
Thank you. Yes, the coloured patches often denote which sheep have received some medicine or other. The shepherd will mark them with a non-toxic spray to make sure none of them gets a double dose as after a while all sheep tend to look alike!
Thank you for asking that question – I wondered the same thing. And thank you, Lady Carnarvon, for explaining.
I remember John saying that very saying to you in a post about a year and a half back and I literally “laughed out loud” when I read it. Now every time I hear that phrase I think of him and Highclere. Your home truly is a dream, and it’s easy to see why your employees think that as well. Living and working at Highclere sounds like a lovely dream and adventure. Never a dull moment. Thanks for brightening my Monday.
He does tend to use it, especially when things are rather fraught.
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
I had the pleasure of visiting Highclere for a special tour on June 19th and attended the concert on June 22nd. I was simply giddy as we walked from the lower gate up to the castle. The rolling Green hills, all of the sheep grazing about, and the peace about us was heavenly! Then, the castle came into sight and I literally gasped. After we reached the ticket booth and showed our papers to the kind gentleman collecting tickets, the walk toward the castle was breathtaking. I didn’t realize that I would be so affected by the experience. It was like being in the show!!
We had a lovely tour of your home and an afternoon tea (delicious food& coffee). Receiving one of your books was icing on the cake. We walked around the grounds and I could remember scenes from the show.
The concert was also an experience of a lifetime! To see so many dedicated fans and Julian Fellowes was seated just across from us! I snapped a photo ! Everything was so we’ll planned out and perfect. Only downside was that there weren’t enough food & drink vendors for so many people. We’re you in attendance for the concert??
Your blog describes exactly what I experienced while I was there. I felt like I was living the dream or at least had it for the short time I was there at your property and in your home. Thank you for sharing and I now have wonderful memories that will last me a lifetime! Maybe someday I will apply to work with you and help you all keep up with the place!! I would enjoy that just as you all do
Cheers,
Heaher
Thank you Heather!
Dear Lord and Lady Carnarvon,
THANK YOU for a most pleasurable day on Sunday the 7th of July. Coming from Australia we didn’t expect to meet you both in person and were overwhelmed by your warmth and relaxed way you welcomed those you saw. It is true all your staff love working there and have enormous respect for you both. Their were smiles everywhere and it was infectious. Everyone visiting loved their time at Highclere Castle and were reluctant to leave. (Staff included.)
A big thank you for All your staff. They were extremely helpful and knowledgeable and answered everyone’s queries. I was most surprised that a home your size could look so homely. It must be lovely to find a good book from your library and snuggle up by the fireplace and just loose yourself in that room. It looks so inviting. No wonder Julian Fellowes chose your home for the filming of Downton Abbey. A beautiful Castle yes, but indeed a beautiful Home also.
Could you please give a special thank you to Jane in the gift shop, she is truly a hardworking young lady. I loved the selection of gifts you have on offer as did most of the people who swarmed your shop. Very affordable and I couldn’t help myself but buy quite a few treasures to load down my suitcase once more.
Thank you again for a most pleasurable day out. Will highly recommend other visitors to come on TripAdvisor.
Kindest Regards,
Heather and Malcolm Gilbert
Thank you so much. The whole team here works really hard and your kind words mean a great deal.
My granddaughter and I were graciously treated by Sally back in March to a lift to the Pub. We arrived early for our tour and did get to walk up with no one else around! Sally then picked us up at 1:00 to start our tour! So lovely!
Sally is an absolute star!
Such a lovely piece. It puts me in the shoes of those team members who help to make Highclere the well-run castle that it is. So lovely of you as well, to recognize the importance of your staff who are definitely “living the dream.” God bless all of you as you work together to create a welcoming atmosphere. My mother and I both felt the aura of hospitality when we visited in 2017. You led the way with your welcoming spirit.
You are too kind.
Another glorious start to my day- once again your post brought back memories of my childhood experiences. We didn’t have sheep; we had cattle and horses. However, those “bovines and equines” could truly bring a full-stop to any of our fun with their proclivities for escape, injury, and/or sudden illness. You and your husband are definitely hands-on with the estate management; I so admire that. I shall carry on with “living the dream”, too. We all have our challenges; so appreciate you sharing and creating a worldwide extended family of Highclere.
We are hands on – and enjoy being so.
Lady Carnarvon,
I am living a dream of a magical, dreamy place called Highclere Castle. And the wonderful stories you bring to us.
Thank you
What a lovely, dreamy story. It was such a pleasure to read and view the photos. I hope to visit Highclere some day soon. I loved reading your two books about the Carnarvons and hope you will write more about this fascinating family history. By the way, I am related to Lady Catherine through the Lee family. Our shared ancestral grandparents are Sir Ralph de Neville and Joan de Beaufort.
I look forward to your next post.
Best wishes.
How wonderful to hear that!
My dream is coming true this August when I will be coming to visit Highclere Castle! I cannot wait to see the grounds and castle and walk where the Carnarvons and characters from Downton Abbey have been! I enjoy your weekly blog posts of the events and experiences of living at Highclere and I look forward to meeting the wonderful staff that you often write about too! Thank you for allowing others to be able to live our dreams too!
It is a good team – it seems to me happy and confident
I used to live in a rural area as a child…and sometimes I daydream about running through a field on a summer evening, catching fireflies.
I wish I lived close enough to work at Highclere, but alas…Texas is a little too far away. My 13-year -old daughter and I will finally get to visit on August 1. We’re so looking forward to it!
Thank you for posting this. Your stories of life there are inspirational.
Happy Monday~ Allison
I will be around then … hope to see you
When I was doing community theatre here in Texas, we had a saying, “There’s magic in the theatre and the theatre is magic.” I also know how much hard work goes into making that “magic” happen. I am certain it is not unlike that for all of you at Highclere who are making it possible for your many visitors to “live the dream”, even if only for a short while. While a visit to your lovely home is still on my bucket list, for now I must make do with your wonderfully written blogs. Thank you for all the hard work and care you take in doing it.
Thank you!
500 sheep! WOW!!! I am beyond excited for our trip to London and of course the highlight being our tour at your wonderful home! I would move to England in a heartbeat and work at the Castle – that truly would be “living the dream”. But alas I have a husband that I love and a kitty cat here in Napa, CA so here will be my “living the dream” spot on earth for now. Hope to meet you when my cousin and I come to Highclere! We are staying in London and will love the trip to the country on Aug 8 – I told my cousin I have to lower my expectations lest I get too excited!!!
We actually thought at one time another gate was open and the sheep were running round in circles for a laugh!
That is making me laugh even more!!!
It is a dream my husband and I have to visit Highclere. We don’t have a “bucket list” per say, but if we did, visiting your wonderful home would be number one on the list to do. All of us (if we are honest) would love to be a royal or live like one. Since both of our ancestry hails back to England it would be like visiting our forefathers and what their dreams would have been. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home and lives with us.

A beautiful post, Lady Carnarvon, and a wonderful way to start the week for me. It is because of the Carnarvon family and the ‘dreamy’ staff who love the place so much that it naturally conveys over to all who visit. Love and care shine through, even from my perspective so far away from the actual place.
All the best to you and the staff at Highclere.
With gratitude to y’all from over here in Summerville, South Carolina. Now back to my version of ‘Living the Dream’! Lol!
You are kind!
Visiting England in October and so sad that Highclere is closed. Love your love your weekly posts!
There are special guided tours throughout the month! They are selling rather well in fact..
Check the Highclere Castle website. There are a number of days in October when special tours are offered!
Cheers,
Heather
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
I am “living the dream” each time I read your blog posts about life at Highclere! I so wish I could either visit or work there.
Thank you for your thoughtful, humorous, and interesting posts!

Thank you!
My husband and I will be at Highclere “living the dream” in about 3 weeks! I am so excited! I will treasure every moment. I have dreamed of visiting England from first reading Jane Austen 40 years ago to watching “Downton Abbey”. It will be quite an experience for these Virginians.
I have been to Richmond Virginia to give a talk..
I cannot wait to visit in a couple of weeks. We are visiting from Australia and this is at the top of my list!
I should be here – it is so busy I only have a couple of long weekends this summer!
I’ve read your blog for some time now. I was fortunate enough to visit Highclere in late May. Reading your blog now has so much more meaning as I can envision exactly what you describe so beautifully. Thank you!
Lady Carnarvon:
What a powerful and inspirational post. It reminded me of the song for the 2002 Summer Olympic Games “The Power of Dream”___https://allklyrics.com/songs/dnego5/Celine-Dion/The-Power-Of-The-Dream
So this song although written specifically for athletes competing for a prize, who must work hard to even get to participate in competition, fits perfectly and also appropriately with the work you and your team do in order to accommodate visitors and less we forget all the charities especially those supporting veteran and the sick. At the end of the day, your reward, which I liken to the medals given at the games are visitors coming and enjoying your beautiful home and more importantly getting to experience what many have looked forward to –have dreamed of.
There is no better feeling than having dreamed of something for a very long time and having it surpass your every expectation. We have all read about the experiences of your guests because they write about it on your blog and all have been inspirational.
Hope to experience it some day. Thanks for all you do.
Bev
Thank you !!!
Hello,
Another wonderful and a little funny blog!!! You are living the dream. My sister and I will be there next year. I cannot wait!!!
Lisa Cosgrove
A lovely word picture. Thank you.
My dream of visiting Highclere for the second time in September was brought to a sudden awakening when my husband informed me that he is going on a business trip on September and not to schedule vacation then. I’m disappointed but that’s life and things happen. I can’t imagine trying to move 500 sheep at 11:00 pm, but it must have been hysterical. It seems that you always have fun at Highclere!
It was just amazing moving the sheep – the noise!
Thank you again for your blog. Thank you too, (and the team) for maintaining and keeping a lovely house that is so much part of England’s heritage. I remember the days when the lovely country houses in England were being demolished at an alarming rate, some of them ancient and beautiful. Did ‘Country Life’ report one a week was demolished because of crippling death duties? The work you do is so important, probably especially for those of us who are ex pats but our hearts remain in England.
Thank you – a of of owners work hard and with passion!
You ARE a dream and you help all of us live it. “Living the dream” in today’s world requires recognizing, attracting and maintaining helpers to help with the hands-on work, and the imagination, foresight, “elbow grease” (as we say in the States) and prudence to coordinate all of that. Cinderella had a Fairy Godmother with a magic wand — Highclere has you.
Denise you are too kind – but you are right it is hands on!!!
Your blog this week just gets me more excited to see Highclere, which my husband and I will be doing in just 9 days! Your preservation of this wonderful structure is a life’s work. Thank you for taking it on.
What a delightful greeting with the perfect pictures of sheep and staff.
I’ve been to visit Highclere twice now and hope to make another trip sometime soon but, I want you to know the staff there is truly amazing…I don’t believe that just happened. The love and dedication of all who work there is proof…something magical happens to everyone as soon as their feet touch the ground…I believe it is all about the love of Highclere and all it’s grace that draws us to her and before we realize it we’ve magically fallen in love with her and don’t want to be anywhere else.
It has to be the most wonderful place to spend your day working at whatever task is before us…it’s the privilege of working in this magical place called HIGHCLERE CASTLE.
I thank you everyone for all you do to preserve her majesty…especially you.
Downton Abbey, Your Instagram posts, Your blogs. All these aspects makes my life happier I would say.
But one thing is still missing in order to complete my “happier life” list. Visit Highclere Castle ! I hope one day I will be standing in front of the one and only Highclere and I will capture, cherish and remember this moment to it’s fullest ! Keep posting your blogs, Lady Carnarvon !
Wish you all the best,
Jacob! x
Thank you
Greetings from Kentucky ( USA).
My son and daughter in law, visited Highclere in June for the concert and tour Monday. What a treat to spend time in this beautiful castle and grounds. We were delighted and Yes ‘what a dream ! looking forward to your Christmas book.
Wish you the best for a great summer.
Thank you very much!
To be “living the dream” is indeed one of life’s blessings. I was lucky enough to visit Highclere a few years ago and yes it was a dream come true. But I also blessed in that I have a job that allows me to travel pretty much whenever I like where ever I like. Without that there would be no “following my dreams”. Blessed are we who have found our ideal job.
p.s. you may recall me Lady Carnavon. I’m the one from the Antipodes who wrote you a very long letter begging to be allowed to visit. I believe there are still some rugs that need to be “beaten” and a few chimmneys that require cleaning.
Then I am sure you will be back!!
