Just over a year ago in May 2023 one my Labradors gave birth to six tiny puppies. It is a beautiful part of life to observe. From the initial surprise of the whole process, Stella’s natural instincts meant that as each puppy emerged she carefully nuzzled it, cleaned and gathered the tiny mewing creature to her, encouraging it and then took time off whilst yet another puppy made its way into the world.
Sitting quietly on the floor by her, I would lean forwards to pick one up and check it before placing it by her. She would give me a look and pick up the puppy herself putting it where she wanted it. I did try to be patient and respect her views of her situation. Stella never left them, she took no time out at all, just as besotted by her babies as I was.
Later we lifted the puppies and repositioned Stella and her babes in a whelping box. Stella is a beautiful kind and clever dog. That is always what I am looking for and had found a wonderful mate, a dog who was also gentle and intelligent – as well of course as being handsome!
The puppies first relationship was with their mother and life for all of us settled into a good routine. As the puppies grew and Stella was happy to leave them for longer we could spend time watching them, stroking them and talking to them.
They were utterly magic weeks. The puppies watched us and learned, listening for the sounds of voices and exploring the grassy lawn, rolling each other over and snuggling on top of each other, familiar to the touch and smell of their siblings.
After eight to ten weeks, in nearly all cases, a human comes along: removes the puppy from its mummy and replaces themselves with the mother – Stella for example – as a point of love and guidance. Undoubtedly anxious, the new relationship is not one voluntarily chosen by the puppies, but, they adapt and bond with their new family. It was a huge tug for me – they had been part of my life as well as Stella’s.
Whilst four of the six puppies did go to new homes – of course two did not. Poppy and Isla stayed with me and their mother. The last year has just been joyful because I have been so aware that I share them with Stella – we both love them, wake them, play with them, and say goodnight each evening.
They know their names and pick up new requests and games with enthusiasm. Poppy adores her mother, trying to kiss her and nibble her ears every morning although also determined to kiss me and other humans as well. Isla is more shy and more independent but besotted with tennis balls. For some reason they both like sitting on things so I have adapted the dog cages which now have layers of bedding on top to spread their weight, it is the top bed in a bunkbed I suppose. Apart from finding tennis balls entrancing, Isla, however loves sofas: every sofa is hers and not mine.
I try to sit first and then she curls around my shoulders along the sofa back whilst Poppy prefers to lie across my knees. Each of the dogs has its own preferred place and if that works for them it works for me, if not always for Geordie who can be presented with no sofa space.
Stella enjoys her space away from her puppies but then runs with them, teaching them and being chased by them. Poppy does push the boundaries with her mother and sometimes Poppy never leaves her alone.
However what is so nice is when Stella’s mother Finse comes to visit, Stella is the first to say hello and give her a kiss (a lick). Without doubt they are aware of their relationships, even if they do not label them in our language. Sometimes I think it rather nice not being labelled.
Our life and the relationships between me and between each of them is evident through our actions: one of trust, one of respect, of loyalty, of clear communication, of consistency, we are all loyal to each other, we all share a love of food, and I am so grateful to them for unwavering love whatever I look like and and I do love them all equally.
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Ekhart Tolle calls animal “guardians of being”. Their unconditional affection, love and bond calls us to notice many parts of life we might overlook left to our own devices. I have an English Labrador that is to give birth end of June. We too will be keeping one of the litter as a service dog for our son, and we will provide the others a non-profit that trains service dogs for those with disabilities. So much joy to spread all around! Thank you for sharing.
Kind Regards,
Karen
That sounds amazing
I loved reading about the dogs, too. What a great thing you’re doing for your son.
I am a wheelchair-user and have considered having a dog who could be relied upon to do certain things. Once in a while, when I’m getting into my car, a wheel gets out of my hand and goes rolling away. Having a dog to bring it back would be nice. How nice of you to raise puppies for such a purpose!
Thanks for sharing this lovely part of your life. I so enjoyed reading about it and seeing the photos!
From one dog lover to another… what a wonderful heartwarming story . Thankyou for sharing .
Thank you
Thank goodness for dogs..
Yip dogs are the best companions Never have a bad moodUnless you have left them for a few days !
Love Loyalty for their lifetime
Such lovely Monday morning s!iles. Thank you from Idaho.
When we visited your beautiful home in June of 2023, you told us of the puppies birth. It is such a pleasure to hear an update on the amazing puppies and their clan.
The first part passes so quickly
It’s such a wonderful thing to see. It was the same when I used to breed cats, such lovely family bonds.
Such a lovely post, thank you
Having just returned from visiting dear friends who farm in the Leicester area (and touring Highclere), I know every Englishman (or woman) has his dog (usually a Lab). Well, maybe not so much in the cities. But, it is a dear thing to watch. I love the name Isla. Didn’t Lord Grantham have an Isla? We were entertained royally by all the Wells’ friends, family and I learned that one dessert at the end of the meal (pudding you call it) is never encough. And heavy cream is poured over everything. Have you done a food blog? Would love a blog on…….Sticky Toffee Pudding!
Shape up that little shop; you are missing a golden opportunity to market Highclere.
All the best, Judi Heidkamp, Scottsdale, Arizona
Lord Grantham had a dog named Isis.
I have done some recipes ..and cook books obviously
Lady Carnovan
Enjoyed this post. Big lab lover. Was curious, how do you find homes for some of the puppies? Thank you
Having litters of puppies and kittens in a household is a joy to me over the years. I have enjoyed your story of your experience and yearn to have a new pet in my elderly household, but I have settled for one shelter cat to provide me with the warmth and affection of a pet.
Good morning,
So lovely to read about your experience of Stella and her puppies.
Each dog is unique, with their own personality, as we are as humans.
I had 2 labs. My yellow lab Poppy from 8 weeks old, then we rescued Bob our black lab from DBARC aged around 5. There has been much heartbreak in our household over the last 3-4 years. Losing my mum in Feb ‘21 after living with us for 18years. Bob left us aged around 15 in Dec ‘22, then Poppy last Nov ‘23…….. compounded heartbreak that left me utterly bereft.
But, time passes and we carry on – the hands of time not stopping for a second. In August we are expecting a new addition to our family. A yellow lab pup. I’m also waiting to rescue a dog too.
I’m thoroughly engrossed in an amazing book called Puppy Brain by an amazing woman, Kerry Nicols, and I’ve so enjoyed seeing the progress with your lovely pups.
But I have to ask – did any of your dogs feature in Downtown? I’m curious to know!
Andy & I are hoping to visit Highclere someday. Maybe we might see your Poppy and the many others!
Love your ‘letters’. Always such an enjoyable read.
Kindest regards
Dawn.
Hello Dawn
I’m sorry for the loss of your dear dogs. None of my dogs were in Downton Abbey. Your book sounds like a good read.
Best wishes
Lady Carnarvon
They watch Downton!
Such a lovely story of the puppy journey.
We recently lost our girl, a 13 year old ShihTzu who we knew from her birth and rather than be too sad we prefer to hold dear the amazing memories we have.
Thank you for sharing your journey.
Instant LOVE…..your story was soooooo lovely ! thank you for sharing !
Nothing as wonderful as human & animal connection like this. Life would be so dreary without our wonderful pets!
Indeed, life wouldn’t be as joyful without our dear dogs.
Hello Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you for the lovely insight on dogs and unconditional love.
I have a lovely 6 month old springer spaniel and at the moment she is driving me a little crazy! I have not properly slept since we brought her home and she often forgets that shoes, tv remotes and hair brushes are not toys. However when she looks at me with her lovely eyes and tells me she needs me and loves me, I forget that she just destroyed a favorite handbag or left a surprise on the rug!
They teach us so much
I so enjoyed reading of the lovely bond between yourself Stella and puppies .I once worked at a vets practice .A puppy was born ,but rejected by the breeder ,as it did not conform to standard, It was duly adopted by a little autistic boy ,who loved him not for appearance ,but the love and trust between them. It was wonderful to witness them both grow and thrive .
What a great story
Janice, in Canada we call those puppies “rescue dogs” because someone rescued them from destruction. Your anecdote reminded (as do so many things) of my purebred Dachshund who also didn’t conform to show standards. He was one of the three best dogs I’ve ever owned.
Oscar’s heart went far above “show standard”.
Dogs are pure heaven. Our two cavapoo puppies bring joy and laughter to our household every day. Thank you for this lovely appreciation of their innocent love and loyalty.
Labs are the most wonderful dog ever created. Especially with children they are loving and protective. A very loyal member of the family.
Always my favorite – when you write about your dogs!! I agree with your thought – “Sometimes I think it rather nice not to being labelled.” Thank you Lady Carnarvon for a your sweet dogs story to begin my Monday.
Very kind of you!
We have kind of fallen in to having our daughter’s dog…a real mixture of dachshund, silke, Jack Russell and foxy! They got him when our 15 year old granddaughter was sick with osteosarcoma and subsequently passed away. We had never been inside dog people having both come from working dog homes but this little puppy has literally stolen all our hearts and spends time with us when his real family are away. We love him to bits! And he rules our house Have been to beautiful Highclere as our friends live at East End. The Battle Proms were a highlight. Sending best wishes from NZ.
Written like a true Dog Mama! My dear mini-schnauzer, Barron, is my heart. Dogs give us so much – I cannot imagine my life without one. I admire your devotion to the K-9 members of your family!
I can’t either..
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
your Labradors are absolutely adorable! They really are the best dogs. We had a rescue Labrador called Mel, she had been badly abused and over-bred, but she invited herself into our lives, stole our hearts and had a wonderful retirement with us. Thanks to her we have since enjoyed Hudson, who is now 12 years old going on 2, recently widowed (we lost our lurcher Fizz) and we will probably have Labradors for ever. There is something very special about a Labrador owner!
Kind regards
Jane Bentley
They are just such loving dogs
What a lovely storey. XXX
I truly enjoyed this post about Stella and her pups! Being a dog parent is an incredible journey that enriches our lives.
It does enrich us
Unconditional love. They are just gorgeous, when they are born it’s that lovely smell too. Fabulous story as always.
Thank you.
Lady Carnarvon,
This is the sweetest story! I’m sure Poppy and Isla as well as their siblings in new homes are having a lovely time playing and growing up. I have Marlow, a little Havanese, who has brought so much joy to my life on his own, I can’t imagine having him in multiples! 🙂 Wishing you all the best, and perhaps your pups will make their debut in the new movie!
Warmest wishes from “across the pond” in NYC
They have found the catering trucks
Lady Carnarvon,
My heart let out a sigh as I read your doggie story this morning. Thank you for a very warm way to start the week – love and tenderness. Chester, our Welsh Springer, left us at age 14 – a lot of human years, I believe, but he lived them so joyfully, almost prancing around at the very end. I’m quite sure Lord Carnarvon understands the sofas!
Enjoy your sweet dogs!
Martha G
Thank you – not sure he does quite get the sofas!!!
Lovely the pictures of relationships did you and lord Carnarvon have a wonderful weekend l am fan of Downton Abbey and lovely highcelere castle
I will never forget being at Highclere one year ago while this blessed event was unfolding. I will treasure that memory always.
It is rather amazing
This is a subject near and dear to my heart as we have 2 Shetland Sheepdogs (have had 3 in the past). Our relationship with them has greatly enhanced our lives from the time they were born to when they came to live with us in their new home. When we brought our last one home, she sat in my arms in the car for the 3 hour trip with her wee head tucked into my arm. It occurred to me that her entire world changed – her puppy mommy, her first human, her siblings and cousins, her home and familiar sounds and smells, her water & food bowls – every single thing. She adapted quickly and loved her new sisters (our other 2 Shelties) immediately and quickly claimed her favorite places in her new home. It was amazing watching our two older Shelties teach their baby sister rules and boundaries and their games. Dogs, no matter the breed, are amazing beings and I am grateful each day for what they bring to our life, our home, and our family.
As you say Lois, they bring so very much to our lives.
Best
Hannah
I once had a part Shelty and part Corgi. She was the sweetest dog. She would sit as a black kitten named Spooky sucked on her chest. I miss them both. Current friends I have are an Aussie, a silver tabby and a “tiger cat,” equally as dear, of course.
What a nice story. You’re so right the relationship between dogs and humans is so special. Tristan, our mix wirehaired pointer with Australian shepherd is so dear to us. But, he has taken over the sofa in the family room and living room and king size bed. We love him dearly, and he takes advantage of that. Each time we pet him, he goes to his treats as if saying, “I allowed you to love me now give me a treat.”
Dear Lady Carnarvon
My girl also has a litter, Shetland Sheepdogs, 2 years ago. It was my first litter, as it was hers. Neither of us knew what we were doing. We lost 2 of six, but the other 4 were a lot of work. My girl was not the maternal type. It took her about 3 weeks for her instincts to come out and by that time they were ready to start weening. I still have 2 of the 4. They were to be my next show dogs but alas they did not work out. Thank you for the story and pictures.
This is one of my favorite essays you have written because I share in this love for our furry friends. I have had 3 delightful border terriers and each one so unique and much loved and true companions that have each captured my heart. Their lives enrich ours and bring to it so much joy, unconditional love and laughter- and terrible heartache when it is time to say goodbye.
Dogs are the thing that round out our lives and make it complete. I admire your devotion and loyalty to your dogs and you do give them the best life any canine friend could ever wish for.
Best wishes to you and your furry brood!
Valentine Snell
Thank you Valentine.
You have a rare gift with words; a verbal, vivid painting of your life and your joys. I no longer have dogs since I no longer able to give them the care they need and deserve. But I do have two 17-year-old cats. Tater Tot and Big Red. I discovered that as long as I needed to hear a positive answer to a question, all I had to do was ask it. One day, feeling particularly tired and disgruntled, I asked Big Red if I was pretty. His answer was a loud vocalization of “yeah.” It startled me, then I giggled.
such a lovely story THANK YOU .
So very sweet! Poppy and Isla are so happy to stay with their mother and with you in the grand halls of Highclere! Wonderful news.
Someone in my London Travel Tips group on fb posted the following: “Looking for people’s experience with a Downton Abbey tour of Highclere Castle. I’m a devoted fan of the show and want the experience that will have us seeing the most of the village and Castle. TIA”
I posted about the experience we had in 2018 when we attended a concert at Highclere and mentioned the champagne, canapes reception we attended last December. I let them know we had fun both times and that we enjoyed touring the castle and meeting you.
Hello Roxana
I’m so pleased you enjoyed your visit.
Lady Carnarvon
Thanks, Lady Carnarvon, for sharing your heartwarming account of Stella and her pups. I’m sure Poppy and Isla will bring you much happiness. Thanks for bringing a much-needed smile, as I always enjoy your blogs.
What a beautiful post this morning. Thank you for sharing your doggies and other aspects of your life as well as your home, Highclere Castle.
I think todays post has had the most replies back I have seen.
I have always had dogs, cats and horses, although now sadly no horses which I miss. I am 75 now and I have a wish to ride a horse again at least once before my time comes!!
Our last dog was a very handsome chocolate Labrador named Lennon. He started off with our daughter Natasha but as I had taken early retirement I would collect him and take him out most days, then he would stay overnight then a couple of days, until he became our dog. At the time she had two small children and a part time job, so it worked well. We sadly had to say goodbye to him just after one Christmas. I found it so hard to let him go, my husband even more so, we had our vt come to us and sat with him, his eyes told us that he had enough and they were full of love before they glazed over. Now I am crying!!
Later that year, our daughter and son-in-law arrived the day before my husband’s 70th birthday, and what should jump out of their car but a yellow 11month old Labrador, he was already called Dexter so we kept that name. What a lively lad he was and still is now he is nearly nine. A young couple had him but they lived in a semi detached house, and Dexter does not like to be left alone, they both worked, and their neighbours stated to complain about the barking. They realised that it was not fair on Dexter to be left alone and for the neighbours to have constant barking, so this is why he was 11 months when Natasha bought him. It came to our 50th wedding anniversary, and not needing anything, I asked our daughter if she would put towards paying for a rescue dog from Romania to come to the UK. Hence one April we picked up our Stela from the motorway stop at junction 13. I know our spelling is Sella, but on her passport it is spelt as Stela. We y that point lived near Bude so w drove to stay with the family to collect her. She is part Vitzala, of course at first she was nervous, we arrived at our daughters house, and let her into the garden with Dexter and her two Westies, Sir Finley and Bonnie. Within half an hour, it was if she had always been with us. Dexter is a very kind and generous dog and they were great friends from the start. To see them together is a total joy. Not long afterwards, I adopted a cat from the same lady in Romania who had Stela, they seemed to recognise one another and we had no problems with dogs and cats together. We have moved back to near Newbury, along with Dexter, Stela, and by now a further four Romanian rescue cats and a further three UK rescue cats. When my husband had to undergo a kidney transplant last October, having my dogs and cats kept me going through a stressful time.
Although we lived in Newbury for forty years, we never visited Highclere, now we are close again, we will remedy this.
As an aside, our dear son-in-law is a Kendall and his father was the GP for your your father-in-law. He lived In Highclere.
Thank you so much for your comment
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you so much for a puppy update. They look so healthy and happy. Poppy and Ilsa are wonderful names. The pictures are lovely. Labs have such beautiful personalities. Please give them a hug. Take care.
Susan
My daughter and I had the sheer delight of visiting Highclere last September (28th). What a lovely surprise to bump into you whilst you were out walking three of your dogs that afternoon. I wonder if they could have been Stella, Poppy and Isla? Anyway it was lovely to meet you and to pat your adorable dogs.
Dogs are awesome! How empty our life would be without them ! Thanks for sharing your dogs with us and the miracle of life . We hope to visit Highclere in the future and see your beautiful dogs!
Goodness! Have you ever had so many responses! We were all touched by love….unconditional!
our friends ..
We love our dogs!!! Congratulations on your pups new family!! My husband and I are retiring and plan to start a charity for animal companions, I want to give back some of the love I’ve been so fortunate to experience from our adopted canine family! If you ever come out the Port Aransas in Texas, don’t hesitate to let us know, we plan to live there and in San Antonio in the near future, and do some good for the lovely people and their furry friends! Take care!
Dear Lady Carnarvon, we visited your castle a few days ago and the gardens were one looked like they came from a fantsy. Your book is so nice, I look at it multiple times a week. Your photos are so pretty! Hoping that I could go back to Highclere one day and meet you in person.✨️
Dear Lady Carnarvon:
Thank you for this Monday’s blog. I enjoyed reading such a heartwarming story. Delightful the updated pictures of the puppies. What growth and progress has been made over the past year.
Until next week, may your relationship with Stella, Isla, and Poppy remain joyful.
Is it even complete world without dogs – especially Labbys ❤️?
Lady Carnarvon,
It is really amazing how much we can love animals. Our Charlie is like Isla. He has all the sofas to himself. These lovely creatures know very well who cares for them. You are wonderful to them and they love you back.
Lady Carnarvon,
The puppies are absolutely adorable! Is there anything more precious than children and puppies? Thank you so much for sharing your fur babies with us!
