Geordie patting Louise
Our British Lop eared sows, Thelma and Louise, had done their best by their serried ranks of piglets and there was a certain amount of obvious relaxation when the young were transferred into another field to rely solely on hard food mixes and their own snuffling and grazing abilities. The two mothers, rather happy to be without responsibility, settled down to enjoy more carefree days.
A week later, Arthur (the boar’s full name is the rather grand sounding King Arthur of Tintagel), returned from being away with a girlfriend in Wiltshire and made himself at home back in his fenced area of the field system some few hundred yards away. Forgetting all their previous irritations with their young, and suddenly noticing he was back, Thelma and Louise charged through three sets of fences to find him, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. They were clearly in season and, if a large pig wants to go somewhere, they just go. Whether or not they anticipated any courting or kind words of Valentines Day is doubtful but it would certainly seem that we will now look forward, sooner rather than later, to more piglets.
With a very different setting, as well as a much more dignified sense of romance, we were looking froward to welcoming guests here for Valentines Day. It is usually one of the most important weeks for hotels and the hospitality business and a lovely reason to create some beautiful, themed events and moments to remember. Afternoon tea at the Ritz Hotel, dinner by candlelight, music or a play in the theatre, all of which rather seem from another life these days.
Undoubtedly such treats will return. Despite the unusual closeness in which we have been living this past year, Valentine’s Day will again be within our homes and it is down to each of us to mark the calendar day as we can. It is a shame for our guests who had planned a special day out for a loved one here at the Castle but there will be many other opportunities.
For our part here at the Castle, we are gathering up our optimism and hoping that a truly special day out with lovely tours, time to explore and wander and a delicious tea still appeals.
We have therefore created such a day in June, for existing ticket holders to transfer in to, where they can enjoy the real blooms in the new rose garden as well as the garland winding with much charm down the main staircase. Hopefully the sun will be shining with that lovely buttery summer glow and the champagne will have an extra fizz to celebrate our freedom whilst you enjoy the prettily decorated food. I hope it will be beautiful day and am really looking forward to it and so grateful to those who have already agreed to transfer.
If valentines is about roses and love, then a summer’s day in June should tick all the boxes. The piglets will be born and Thelma and Louise will once again be busy. We will be more careful as to Arthur’s whereabouts and hopefully looking forward to a successful summer opening.
Lady Carnarvon, stunning photos. I am sure it will be a wonderful get together in June. I wish you and Lord Carnarvon a very Happy Valentines Day filled with much love. Heartful Best Wishes To You, Cheryl.

Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Beautiful days to look forward to, and I know that everyone (myself included) will look forward to a special visit to Highclere. You and Lord Carnarvon do so much to encourage and sustain optimism. The freedom to wander the gardens and Castle, consume delightful drinks and treats, and be renewed in the magnificent landscape will return. It will be doubly memorable with a sighting of the unpredictable Thelma and Louise, as well as the sheep and horses.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your loved ones, and thank you for helping us all hold hope for the future. We WILL get there!!
Best regards,
Charlotte Merriam Cole
Thank you Charlotte
I enjoyed your story this morning! My husband is technically challenged therefore I read him bits of what I see. Being farmers (mostly retired) we enjoy the animal stories. We had a laugh at Thelma and Louise’s exploits! Have a Happy Valentines Day. We will be sitting at home in hibernation till we get our COVID vaccinations!
I think we all have to be careful a little longer, we are all close to the line but not there yet!
Your photos are beautiful, thank you for sharing your stories of life at Highclere, too! We visited in 2013 and so enjoyed seeing it in person! Happy Valentine’s to you and your husband!
Lady Carnarvon what lovely photos and happy Valentine’s Day to you and Lord Carnarvon and pancake day the Tuesday 16th February
We are taking each day as it comes!
Dear Lady Carnarvon, it is always a pleasure to read about this magical world called Highclere. Best wishes from Tirol

My Dear Lady! It’s so glad read about Highclere and you! The beautiful roses, the grass, the dogs, pigs and the other lovely animals there ! they’ re the cause of hapiness and love in your life. Be happy ever, and enjoy the life like you are! WITH LOVE, FROM ARGENTINA ! Adriana Valle
How kind and all best wishes to you
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
We are all saddened that we still aren’t able to travel and gather as we had in the past. Even though Highclere won’t be open for Valentine’s Day, I think it will be lovely “celebrating” in June. Everything always seems more hopeful with beautiful flora and fauna to view. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Lord Carnarvon. May it be one to always remember.
Best Regards,
Pam Oates
Celebrating in June will be wonderful
Thank you for sharing Thelma and Louise stories to brighten our day. Looking forward maybe in 2022 to return to visit Highclere.
Pleased you enjoyed!
What a joy it is to read about your home each Monday morning and the adventures the come with it. This time I had a good chuckle imagining the scene you described of Thelma & Louise “charging through 3 sets of fences” to find King Arthur of Tintagel. Oh my! May the celebrations in June be the best! Happy Valentines Day to you and the Highclere Castle family.
Lady Carnarvon- Happening upon both your podcast and your website in 2021 has brought a bit more magic, beauty, hope, and anticipation of the joys that 2021 might {hopefully} hold.
Your stories and photos of Life at Highclere truly have the ability to transport one to an enchanted world. Thank you for all you do.
Welcome to my Monday blog
Hello Lady Carnaron – I am writing from “across the pond” and it is lovely to see green grass and flowers on your site. Although sunny today the temperature is -15 C and the lawns are covered with snow. I look forward to your stories especially when the animals are included. Once travel has opened up I plan on visiting Highclere and seeing the beauty of the property for myself. Keep up the great work and hopefully see you soon.
Best
Marilynn
Oh, the Days of Wine and Roses, and Hearts and Valentines will come, hopefully in sunny June, and how much more they will be appreciated than ever before. Thank you for bringing such cheer on this Monday with happy thoughts and beautiful images. A most Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
Thank you!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
the pigs sound like real characters, and ladies to be reckoned with! I expect Arthur though Christmas and Valentines day had all come at once!! Valentine’s day at Highclere in June sounds idyllic, and the perfect backdrop for a proposal. You could have fun watching to see how many men drop on one knee ands have your butler running around the lawn with glasses of champagne when it happens! Such fun!
Jane
It is so lovely and uplifting to see an engagement – and also the love that does not know age – couples who still take time out to be
HAPPY VALENTINES HIGHCLERE
To a hopeful spring which will bring faith over fear and love to all of us….
We enjoy your “podcasts” and daily “posts on Instagram” while we are unable to travel to visit our family in the UK it brings us a moment where we can sit and enjoy a cup of tea & a scone.
Of course SKYPE and FaceTime is helpful to keep in touch with family & friends….
Wishing you a joyful springtime and it would be fun to hear how the cherry trees are growing?
From sunny Scottsdale. Arizona,
Che’rie, Stephen & Chloé
Dear Lady Carnarvon:
Your Monday blog was a great read for this wintery day (16 degrees Fahrenheit with snow on the ground and more on its way). Just the thought of June and Summer roses brought me some much needed warmth.
Wishing you, Lord Carnarvon, and the staff at Highclere Castle a Happy Valentine’s Day.
Until next Monday, keep forward planning.
Perpetua Crawford
Lady Canarvon, You look so beautiful in the opening Rose Garden photograph! I hope you are as rested as you look in this photo! Have a lovely week! From Louisville KY, USA
For her 50th birthday, which was many years ago, I gave a surprise Miss Piggy party for my mother. Mom loved Miss Piggy. I did not expect guests to bring presents, but if they chose to, it must have something to do with Miss Piggy. Some brought cards, others small gifts, but my country cousins brought her a real, live, little, white pig with her toenails painted pink and dressed in a pink bonnet and skirt. After some hesitation, the buffet restaurant employees allowed the real Miss Piggy in.
“Sir, I’m sorry but pets are not allowed.”
“But, sir, this is not a pet. It’s a barnyard animal!”
So, Miss Piggy made her debut. They handed the piglet to my elegant mother who had never held a pig in her life. Miss Piggy squealed to the top of her lungs and pee-ed on the carpet. We laughed till we cried.
Farmer John’s Country Kitchen has since closed.
Very funny story!
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Lord Carnarvon. Beautiful pictures.
Lady Carnarvon,
So it IS okay for the girls to chase the big boy! I did and finally allowed him to catch me – of course he’s much cuter than Arthur!
The first picture of you among the flowers is simply beautiful – and your lovely dress just sets off the blooms.
Thank you for a colourful preview of spring and summer, and new piglets!
Martha G.
Lady Carnarvon,
What a magnificent staircase- and I can smell the sweetness all the way to my home in the Midwest- USA!
Thelma and Louise are so pretty! Although we don’t live on a farm or in the country now, we are very close. We see sows similar in beauty, to your Lop ear’s , so can well understand part of what was driving their love-lust for King Arthur’s return. We’ll be anxious to hear of future updates in the piglet arena!! Until then, good health to you and your family.
Sincerest Regards, Jane Hrabak
Jane I will keep you updated!
Gosh! How clever of you (and the mothers) to raise lots of piglets. I am told they are difficult creatures, but my only experience was a loose piglet on market day long ago. The sight of grown men throwing themselves at him (and missing) put me off pig raising. Sorry about the fences I am preparing to get Buff Orpingtons..much less agressive! It is seed raising time here and peas, beans and onions are already peeping through in my greenhouse. I miss England very much, but my third of an acre is quite productive and a joy to work in. Take care with sex crazed ‘hogs’!
I am so please to have discovered your blog, Instagram account and books. While we have sent our sons around the world for schooling and travel, my husband and I finally obtained our very first passports…at 63 yrs old, and England was to be our first destination. We would have flown out on 24 April, 2020, and Highclere was definitely on our agenda. I absolutely love these peeks into your world that you have been so gracious to provide! I find them very consoling as we wait for the time we can finally make that trip. Thank you for the blogs, books and videos!
Thank you!
I was amazed to read about the gestation period of pigs. One author wrote the rule of three: 3months 3weeks 3 days approximately 115 days.. I guess Thelma and Louise have short memories. Did they really charge through three fences? Keep us posted on their progress.
Sandie Carpenter. Whitefish, Montana
115 days is correct
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Reading your stories always fills me with nostalgia. My family and I moved to Canada 14 years ago and I very much underestimated how much I would miss the history and heritage of the UK. Your writings always give me a very welcome refresher.
When circumstances allow I hope to visit your wonderful home on a trip back to see my family
Thank you
We look forward to seeing you here!
Dear Lady Carnarvon
Thank you again for your blog.Happy Valentine’s Day to you both.
I am now reading the second of your books.Lady Catherine and the Real Downton Abbey and loving it.
At my age (83) I totally enjoy all things Highclere.
Kathleen from Canada
Thank you Kathleen
Good morning from Fort Worth, Texas. As I read your clever descriptions of the hogs, it brought to mind the visits my sister and I had with our Uncle Leslie and Aunt Hassie in East Texas when we were very young. It was a long trip at that time in the 1950’s. Our uncle raised massive black and white hogs and the only word of advice was, “Girls, don’t get too close to the hogs. They will eat you.” Although aggressive, they did love to be scratched, so he gave us a piece of wood fencing to scratch their backs through the slats. But the thought that I was low on the food chain rather changed my four-year-old mind about thinking, “Oh! What pretty pigs!” Thank you for sharing your stories.
Pigs are supposed to be among the most intelligent of animals and now we know at least some of them are among the most, um, motivated. When I lived in my former home on the edge of the city, I had gone out and planted an entire long row of beautiful Marigolds along the edge of my property, over 50 of them. Across the street from my home was another home and behind it, a farm. The farmer had hogs. My neighbor called me to say one of the hogs was walking along the street, neatly biting off and eating each of the bright orange flowers of my newly planted Marigolds. My neighbor and I got brooms and chased the hogs back across the street. The hogs had gotten together and torn down the barbed wire fencing to make their escape. After getting the hogs back onto their land, we rewired the fencing and called the farmer to tell him he needed to repair it. Returning to my home, I gazed upon the pitiful sight of my newly planted hog snacks, each one now a stalk without a bloom. I don’t know how intelligent pigs (and hogs) really are but I can guarantee their determination.
They are smart, I always stop by talking to them !!! Voice recognition …
Greetings Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you so very much for your wonderful Happy Valentine’s Day thoughts. They are just what the whole world needs to hear during these challenging times. The pictures are beautiful, and all the animals are so special. Blessings to you and all at Highclere!
Rev. Daryl C. Higgins
Thank you so much
I just love all the Thelma and Louise stories, and now Arthur! Thank you for the Monday smile as I imagine Thelma and Louise knocking down the fencing to get to Arthur!
I was trying to think back to how many times Thelma and Louise have farrowed. Is this the third time? They have certainly been quite productive.
One of these days Highclere Castle will be back to normal. Here’s hoping all the world can get on with a life without COVID-19. That will indeed be a time to celebrate with Highclere Castle Champagne and Gin!
Sending all my best wishes to you and the family,
xxPatsy
How very kind Patsy. It all feels quite tough – for us all where ever we are – at the moment. Animals do keep our feet on the ground!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Piggies seem to have deep feelings. Perhaps Arthur should have been named Romeo. I love your pictures and stories. Thank so much for posting them! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Best regards, Susan
That is so funny! Yes he has a tiring life….
Nice photographs including branded champagne and garland interior @ Highclere
Thankyou!
FLEURINA DECORTES De GILBERT
I do think champagne helps…it is made for us by a great French Champagne house and they are wonderful partners
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you for the belly laughs on this cold and snowy Monday morning! The amorous antics of Thelma and Louise reminded me of Lady Mary’s episode in the mud with her pigs. I am sorry the current lockdown put a lid on your Valentine’s Day plans. We will order carry out from our favorite French restaurant (Chicago area) and start with Highclere Castle gin cocktails. Then share a bottle of Sancerre with our meal. We hope to be able to see Highclere Castle this year!
Yours,
Roberta Fox
Chicago
Thank you – it sounds delicious
Hello Lady Carnarvon
Thelma and Louise remind me of a bull we once bought who could clear fences like an olympic high jumper. My husband spent countless times repairing fences and hunting this rogue bull back to where he should be. We are sure we could see a smile on his face every time! Needless to say he soon went back to the sale yards, he had proved to us that he came from a large cattle property where he did as he pleased and was not going to stay in any paddock smaller than 1000 acres!
We also once took delivery of 100 breeding ewes and I emailed all my friends asking them to submit names for them. Back came lists and when one friend came to stay at the farm I cooked a leg of lamb for dinner. She gave me a horrified look at the table and said “this isn’t Daphne is it”? I quickly replied “of course not……….. its Barbara”……another one on her list !!! We then proceeded to toast Barbara far into the night, a fitting farewell to any sheep LOL I miss the farm and the fun we had but I don’t miss the hard work one little bit,
I love your photograph surrounded by beautiful roses, a symbol of England framing a lovely English rose 🙂 Happy Valentines Day to you and Lord Carnarvon, I hope your day is special and a wonderful reminder of your life together. May it continue for a long time.
Best wishes
Joy Roebig
May it continue for all of us!
Remembering that nothing, absolutely nothing, lasts forever and the Castle will once again be hosting loveliness with all of its fineries, keeps anticipation relevant as we look forward to tomorrow.
Last night I dreamt I went to Hampshire again – to spend Valentine’s Day in June at Highclere. I can think of nothing I’d rather have to look forward in this new year that was supposed to be so much better than the last.
Those lucky ticket holders – and fortuitous future piglings, too!
Dreams can come true!
Lady Carnarvon,
I so look forward to reading your weekly posts! I also love your podcasts! They are a very welcome escape from the current pressures of the world. Thank you!
We raise LaMancha dairy goats and I so appreciated reading about Thelma and Louise! I could easily relate to their behavior when they are in season! I adore your whimsy when writing about them!
Cheers to brighter days ahead!
More piglets sounds like a fabulous situation. My sister had piglets named Hamlet and Omelet. “the garland winding with much charm ” – what a lovely snippet of English prose. Happy Spring to all of you and yours.
Thank you – spring again !!
What a lovely story! It brings back memories of our farm. My husbands family farm since 1907. We bought it and raised our 6 children there. We also raised 200 hogs every year, had hunting dogs and I had beautiful flowers beds. I miss it but happy in my condo now. I enjoy all of your stories and pictures. Your dogs….my last dog was a yellow lab. So thank you again for making me smile today.
Hello!!!
What a very fun story about your sows!!!! When a lady is in the mood, nothing will stop them!! 🙂
Loved your story and June will be very special.
Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day yourself.

Good luck!
Simonetta Mingazzini
Beautiful words. I love your podcasts too. You have inspired me to order a George Herbert book of poetry and once again read Persuasion. I enjoy your stories and pieces of history so much. I do hope one day you will be able to visit Australia. I’m sure if you haven’t already visited you would love it. It is a beautiful place full of sunshine and resilient people.
Warm wishes
Marilyn Roberts
Thank you Marilyn
Lady Canarvon, thank you for always giving us a laugh as you tell the story of Thelma and Louise and their exploits to find their beau and for giving us hope that we may enjoy seeing Highclere in all its glory in the summer. Listening to your podcasts is just so enjoyable and comforting and participating in the virtual Cocktail Party’s are so fun. My plan is to see Highclere as soon as I can and walk the beautiful grounds. Take care Lady Canarvon and have a great day.

Lady Carnarvon, My husband and I were dairy farmers many years back. We had no pigs on the farm but throughout the county there were many pig farmers. They are a clever animal and do like attention from there owners. They can be quite affectionate too. Besides dogs I love farm animals. Best Wishes, Cheryl
