I am fairly sure that my husband never envisaged ending up with nine dogs. In some ways I too am not entirely sure how we have quite so many but, thinking about it, they are really all about family and friends.
It began with Percy, a yellow Labrador I bought from a friend when my son was about two years old. He sadly died over four years ago. He was followed in 2005 by Rosie, our chocolate working cocker spaniel, whom I bought from Eddie, our Head Keeper, as a Christmas present for my husband and son. She is a little like a walking cuddly bear, touched with grey, and much loved, and has remained an optimistic, kind member of our family ever since, even if she is now a little deaf (although I am not always entirely convinced that it is not a selective deafness).

Bella and Karine waiting to hitch a lift in a car.
Bella, the current matriarch of the Labrador family, is Percy’s daughter. A beautiful dog, kind and empathetic, she reminds us of how to grow old gracefully. Although she is becoming ever creakier, so that every step becomes an achievement, every now and again she makes it clear that she would like to be included in a walk. Sometimes a wheelbarrow comes to her aid or I drive and retrieve her from the various points of the garden to which she has laboriously hauled herself. Less able to bend and stretch, brushing and scratching her behind her ears, or along her back, means a lot to her.
Rosie the spaniel’s two puppies, Clemmie and Winnie, are always affectionate and have reached the grand age of 7. Winnie has an eternal predisposition to win the naughtiest dog competition but he is very handsome and just wants to be loved, especially when he has jumped out of a car to explore far flung fields, or eaten a loaf of bread, or is convinced the sofa is his.

Scooby Doo and Alfie as puppies
Clemmie gave birth to Evie on the sofa in my study, watched by Luis (Highclere’s “Carson the Butler”) and his daughter Isabella. Two more puppies arrived that night in my bedroom in the Castle. One left us to live with friends but Isabella and Luis kept Ted or Super Ted, a very handsome brown cocker spaniel with white markings just like his grandmother Rosie. I just had to keep Evie: adorable, tiny, very fast and with a quick intelligence, she sleeps curled up at the foot of our bed every night or she howls.
In 2012 Bella had ten puppies in and turned even whiter overnight. Not surprising, but what a gift they have been to various families and, of course, to my friend Karine. Uncertain at first about the responsibility of a dog, she then fell in love with Finse, a life changing and life giving moment. Our love of these dogs, the walks we enjoy together, “the minute’s pause and moment’s thought” the walking with nature and chance to observe and listen and laugh whilst the family of dogs play, gives us both an anchor in a relentlessly busy life.
I kept two out of Bella’s litter – Alfie and Scooby Doo. I am not sure how I managed it but I think Geordie was so pleased to see eight puppies go, that just two more at that stage seemed almost a positive result. They are as keen on swimming as their grandfather Percy and we all go down to a small lake here and they swim whilst I paddle in a canoe (called Captain Percy) which Karine gave me.
Alfie is a lovely fox red colour, very protective of me and has his own view of walks. I stop to talk and he has slips away to inspect Sally’s gift shop stockroom, the bins in the Castle office and the remains of scones from around the tea rooms. He was particularly fond of Downton Abbey’s catering bus and enjoyed their afternoon tea and biscuits on the trestle table outside the front door. Conveniently he never hears us calling him. Scooby Doo by contrast is quite modest and a good working dog in the shooting field unless he is feeling shy.

Stella the little star
Karine’s beloved Finse had puppies just last year and Geordie, accepting that they would not all leave, proactively agreed that I could keep one. In honour of Finse’s Viking life and Karine’s heritage he called her Freya, which is such a lovely name. As Karine’s puppies began to go off their new homes, the fate of one little girl remained unclear. Of course I knew that meant she should stay and keep her sister company. To try to save my marriage, the Highclere team diplomatically nicknamed her Mirage. For quite some time Geordie thought she was waiting to go elsewhere but, ten months later, Stella, as she is now named, so elegant and smart, is very much still here and, with her sister Freya, the mainstay of the office.

Freya having a quick cuddle
This September we shall have to have a reunion of our families of dogs which will thus be even more chaotic than usual but what fun. That is life – moments of happiness like bubbles in a stream.
MY DEAR LADY CARNARVON,
BEAUTIFUL DOGS.
LOVELY SUMMER FOR YOU.

What a wonderful story you tell, especially today when you share your dogs with us. It is so obvious they are loved, and your enjoyment of them and their company is a joy to read. Thank you for sharing them with us.
We were lucky to visit Highclere last week all the way from USA. I was sorry that we did not get to meet you or your lovely fur babies. But what a thrill it was to visit your beautiful home.
Thank you
Mimi Ragan

I am glad – it has been a crazy work week!
You have beautiful dogs yes cocker spaniels do have selective deafness as my louis an orange roan had at times I absolutely adore cocker spanielsxx
They are so loving and incorrigible!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful dogs with us. It is lovely to know the line they are from and you know the little quirks they have. We have 8 of our own 7 labrador and a border terrier or terror.
I love that name ! Terror…
So sweet and genuine. Dogs more than anything else make life worth living and teach us so much about undying love and unquestionable forgiveness. They complete us. They are positively majestic and intuitive. How honored I am to have been close companion friend/family to my dogs. Your dogs are stunnong.
Oh, how lovely to see this blog! Nine dogs! And at Highclere! Once again, thank you for welcoming us into your life.
Thank you
I lost my handsome Sonny , at 13 yrs.
Most well behaved yellow Labrador.
Yours are beautiful.
I think Bella was 13½ – she kept going as long as she could!
Look at all those sweet faces. How could anyone resist?
I rarely can!
Our four-footed children are special. I believe that many husbands end up grateful that they outnumber the two-footed ones.
You are quite right
I love this story! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
your dogs are amazing and they all look so well behaved in each other’s company. Like you, my sister has nine dogs, I won’t call her “batty dog woman” any more, now that I know she is in good company and not alone in having so many! I have just two dogs, a lurcher (Fizz) and a yellow lab (Hudson – named after the river not the butler in this case), Fizz was going to be Nile, but my son named her in a hurry as he did not like my choice. I very much like your choice of names, do you find, that if you call one particular dog, a different one comes running?
Kind regards
Jane
They are all remarkably good at knowing their names – we have deliberately chosen names with differing vowel sounds and cadence to aid in retrieval.
They are lovely ❤️
They are – and they know it!
One my very first visit to Highclere I had the great pleasure to me Alfie. What a sweet boy, I was thrilled as I left my own loveable pup Dundee Skye at home and was missing him something awful. But Alfie was all smiley and was more then happy for my attention. My memory of Alfie is he, Lady Carnarvon and myself wedged in small hallway as the group was about to explore the house and Alfie decided he wanted to join along. I believe he was lured away with the explanation that Lady Carnarvon needed his help in her office. What a wonderful dog and so lucky to have such a caring mistress. They really do make our lives so much better.
I think it was the Castle office and he nips quietly up the Red Stairs but does sometimes get shut in a room as a result of his own mis-endeavours!
What a delightful tale of the many tails that wag at Highclere Castle. Thank you, Lady Carnarvon, for brightening my day.
Hello, from Japan, Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Do you plan to hold “Real Lives & Films Sets Guided Tours”, Sep.2020?
I would like to visit UK in 2020, and really would like to visit Highclere Castle .
I’m wondering if I’ll visit in July or Mid-September.
29 July,2019
Sincerly yours,
Imafuku Kayoko
We will I think !
The love of our four legged family outshines everything! Love without end. I hope to come visit and see your beautiful home, and especially your family of puppies. Thank you for sharing your story. Best wishes from Nashville, Tennessee (USA)
That’s lovely – we have three rescue dogs and I think my family and friends think we’re a bit mad!!! But we love them dearly.
Nothing wrong with madness!
That right there will be part of heaven for me ❤️ More dogs than I have hands with which to pet them! Beautiful! I love your blog posts, Lady Carnarvon. I started reading by the connection to Downton Abbey, now I read them for their and your own sake.
Thank you!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
I love reading your family stories. Your blogs always brightens my day. I’m in Russia at the moment, so I’m not sure if this will reach you. I miss England so much and had a wonderful time at Highclere Castle. Thank you for opening your home to us. It was one of the highlights of our holiday in England. We highly recommend others to visit.
Your blogs always reminds me of home in Australia. I use to bring home all the strays when I was young and one or two were small labradors. My parents even though they had a large family to support, would never turn away anyone needing some love. I quite understand why you have NINE. They are so hard to give up once you become involved. Each one with a different personality. I love their tummies when they are young and their smell. Like small chubby babies. Please give Bella a hug from me. Yes we could learn a lot from dogs about aging gracefully. Take care. Talk soon.
They give us love and encourage us to walk and so we live better – don’t you think?
Yes they do Lady Carnarvon. They keep us physically and mentally healthy. They also have a wonderful name DOG…..GOD backwards, and when they leave this world they take a part of us with them. Thank you for reminding me of what is important in life. Love for one another.
Do you find the dogs pack up?
I have always had 3 labs(old, middle aged and a pup). Never worried about them packing up.
Now I have 5 mixed breed(hound, shepherd, lab mutts) out of the same litter. They were dumped.
Love me but a terror to each other and cats. Always need supervision as they can turn on each other.
All neutered.
So do you have this issue?
This just made my Monday morning much better! Thank you for that :)There’s nothing more fulfilling than the love and loyalty of a dog… or in your case, dogs. They are each so beautiful and I’m so very happy that you’ve given them a much love and a wonderful home. Enjoy your canine family each and every day 🙂
Luckily they had plenty of space to roam – although Alfie and Scooby were rather adept at finding the crew’s packed lunches
You have inspired us (again!). More pups it is. Clearly 2 is not enough. 🙂
At the beginning of a new – very busy work week – your post this morning is just what I needed. Oh how I love dogs. Lady Carnarvon – I had no idea there were this many dogs in your family. They are are beautiful! Where were they when I visited your home last May? All your posts are wonderful. However, this one has to be my favorite one since I signed up to receive your blog.
They have various places they hang out!
Dogs are so wonderful, they truly make a house a home and in your case having a castle means 9 dogs is perfect as they have lots of places to roam. We have 2, a golden Aston Martin and our rescue Katie. I’d love to add a mirage to our group but I think my husband would notice. Thank you for sharing your love of dogs and such wonderful names they all have.
Thank you
How wonderful! They all sound like they bring such absolute joy to and your household.
They do – and to the office staff
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you for introducing us to your four legged family. They’re wonderful!
I shall be reflecting on “bubbles in a stream” for the rest of the day. Such a happy thought!
I hope you have a lovely day. Thank you for starting mine with your doggie blog!
Cheers,
Shelley and Princess, the black Lab, in Virginia
Thank you!
Dear Lady Carnarvon:
I loved your blog today! While you certainly have a lot of dogs, you have a lot of space for them! I know what you mean about them being family! We have two Bichon Frise’s which are an integral part of our family. They bring us much joy and love, as your dogs bring to you! Thank you for sharing them with us!
What a beautiful family! They are the “friends” who never give up on us. Well-done. Have a wonderful week. I particularly like the opportunity for your dogs to swim and play. May your 4-footed family bring you joy and precious memories.
They all swimming but it is quite a damp group that returns with me!!
Dear Lady Carnarvon & Karine,
I ADORE your puppies-ALL OF THEM-so I want you to do something for me. I would like you to pack them all on a first class airline flight and send them to Cleveland!!! I will have their food and make some beds for them-(LOL)
Best of regards,
Ann Catherine Flood
I am sure they would love a holiday in Cleveland!
Oh my❤️
They are such a cute group!
They all look happy and loved and how wonderful they have so much space to roam around! Never a dull moment around the Castle!
Where did they all disappear to during all your filming?.
Love your weekly message… ❤️
They are sort of organised but do pursue their own “script”
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
You never cease to make me laugh on Monday mornings! It is always a great start to a new week. What could be better than a pack of dogs other than a string of horses? The names are priceless and unique and I am sure that the personalities are all different. You are a lucky lady!
Fondly,
Diana Squibb

We are lucky enough to have both
I love your poetic vision
Me encanta su historia y sus perros. Buena semana!!
Muchas gracias
What a wonderful post your dogs are beautiful and have brightened my day ! I love your blogs thank you so much for writing them .
Kindest regards

Thank you
Nine dogs? How lucky you are!
Myriam
Nine times blessed!
Our beloved dog passed away over a year ago. Seeing your post this morning has made me realize how much I miss having a dog around. They are precious!
They are so much a part of the family, it is so hard when they are gone.
I hope there will be many photos and at least one wonderful blog entry when the doggie family reunion happens!
Loved reading about your furry family. I was especially drawn to Bella as one of my pups is 14 years old. We love them all so much, even my two-year old who is a handful. Kudos to you for giving so many a happy home.
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
how lively and lovely they are to show all the ways Highclere Castle blooms with joy. Dogs…they just enrich our lives with the love and joy they give us.
This was such a sweet BLOG…thank you again and again.
Dear Lady Carnarvon: I have just finished watching a special on Highclere Castle, made in 2017, in which you rode one of 2 horses (Frankie, I think?) and the show’s presenter rode the other one. Taking tea in the library was a vicarious bit of enjoyment for me, and the dogs are beautiful! Did you know that “9” is considered the “Protection number”? The idea is that 9 of anything will have a wonderful life. I hope you and your family (humans, horses, and dogs) will do so, too. All the best, Reisa Rogovein
Thank you – I had no idea about 9 being the protection number. I shall tell my husband!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
At the recommendation of a dear friend, my partner and I named our beloved rescue “Denker”. She’s more than a little bit naughty, much like her Downton Abbey namesake! Nine dogs and room for them to roam would be heavenly. As the saying goes, “I’m suspicious of people who don’t like dogs, but I trust a dog when it doesn’t like a person”.
Your delightful blog is always a Monday morning highlight for me here in far-away New Orleans!
Sincerely,
Michael Gallaugher
Dear Lady C —
Somehow, dogs manage to find the deepest part of our hearts ♥️ and endear themselves to us — they bring another dimension to our being and bring out the good in us. What fun to be able to have nine times the devotion. Enjoyed reading about your dog family as they are awesome — thank you for pictures of your brood.
Love and kisses from my little Goldendoodle Snuggly and he wishes he could explore Highclere fields/grounds with your pack.
thank you – you are right they are life enhancers!
How Wonderful! At one point several years ago, my small house held 6 dogs, 6 cats, me and my two daughters. As the girls grew up, they took a few of the babies with them, and sadly over the years, we have had to say goodbye to a few of them. Out of the original, only 2 dogs remain (although not with me) and 5 of the cats. I love them all.
Your canine family sounds wonderful! We tried the twelve step program for dog addiction, but it didn’t work!
I am surprised to learn that you only have nine! With all of your acreage I would be tempted to have many more. They look like they get along well.
We have just two West Highland Terriers and that seems like a handful at times.
Here’s to many more years of furry love for you & your family.
Kathleen
I am not sure what my husband would say!!!
Wow, Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you for sharing all this, beautiful dogs, really wonderful. Marvelous Castle, and Beautiful Lady.
I only have a little dog, his name Sunny, he is a Yorkshire, very smart.
I visited the Castle, I love it so much.
Thank you Lady Carnarvon.
You will have to come back!
Lady Carnarvon,
Another story that has warmed the hearts of dog lovers who keep up with life at “doggie heaven,” the grounds (and some rooms!) at Highclere Castle. Our own Welsh Springer Spaniel, Chester, was 7 years old and still in puppy spirits when we adopted him. He was named for US Navy Admiral Chester Nimitz by his original Navy family, and we coincidentally adopted him the day my Navy husband received news of his promotion to Admiral! It was meant to be. His favorite treat was chocolate chip cookies – only occasionally! He was “our little boy in a dog suit.” We miss him every day since he went to be with other doggie spirits 10 years ago. Thanks for the memories.
Martha G in Cary, NC
Your dogs are beautiful! Do visitors see them or do you keep them away when visitors are on the grounds? I will be there with Viking tomorrow morning for our Highclere tour. I am so excited!
Victoria Hayes from Virginia
Might see you tomorrow!
I know how you end up with so many dogs, you give them as present to your husband and son (haha.) I love Labradrs. We had a black lab and his name was Ruff, he was a thief!. We lost our Scottie five years ago and I told my husband that I want a chocolate lab. My friend loves Mastiffs, so she got one without her husband knowing about it and she told him that it was a foster dog. Two years later, the mastiff has became a member of the family.
Dear Lady Carnaven,
So good to hear the stories of all of your dogs! I was lucky enough to meet you and a few of them in October of 2015. We were on the tour and there you were walking with your dogs. We were so excited to meet you and you were kind enough to chat with us. Have a wonderful week.

Thank you!
Great blog I have a rescued chocolate Labrador called Tess who was used as a puppy factory in N Wales before becoming ill when she was left at rescue centre. I’ve had her over 8 years now and she has reached the same stage in her life as your Bella has. Very stiff and enjoys a snooze more than a walk these days. Age hasn’t dulled her appetite though! She is after all a Labrador. A puppy is soon to be her house mate.
The two puppies keep Bella young!!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
your blogs are the best therapy after a stressful day’s work…
thank you for making me smile!
What a delight hearing about your furry family members…..from one who also has more dogs than intended. One look into those sweet eyes and we can’t resist.
I,am sorry, I love your Blogger, and love dogs,
I should be here then .. just ask in the tearooms
Love all your doggies! They really do enrich your life with their unconditional love. Looking forward to seeing Highclere on Aug 8. I have a little something for you – if I don’t see you I’ll leave it with someone.
I should be here and hope to see you –
Oh my, they are all just adorable! I have two rescue kitties – William & Harry – that I adore. I would love to have a dog, or dogs. In fact, if I had my wish, I would have an entire menagerie – a wild kingdom. A Disney movie, with all the animals frolicking about.
Besides horses and dogs, do you have any other four legged friends, Lady Carnarvon?
Pigs chickens and sheep .. but all live outside!!!
Dear Lady Carnarvon
I’m new to your blog, but what a delight! It brought a smile to my face. How wonderful to see all those dogs loved by you and your family. Lovely photos too!
Thank you!
A book to be written!
I would love to! But there are some books about the family who live at Dogton Abbey – Karine who has Finse and her son Charlie has created them and I add in a few.. they are sold in aid of an education foundation
We are the owners of one of Bella’s beautiful pups. We named him Carson after Downton Abbey and he has been the best addition to our family. He is loyal, he loves swimming and going for long country walks. We couldn’t imagine our lives without him and hope we can be at the reunion in September xx
How lovely to hear from you – yes I need to find out from Karine when she might be around and let you know!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
You hit a ‘home run’ this week! I am a dog lover. We currently have two Yorkshire Terriers. Our Gracie weighs 7 pounds. The other, our rescue from Alaska, Glory, weighs 5 pounds, but she rules the roost! I would have a dozen fur babies if I was allowed. Their love is priceless. They do not place conditions on the love they give so generously. It warms my heart to see the love you have for your sweet fur children. I am convinced God created Dogs because he knew we would need their unconditional love in this crazy world. Dog spelled backwards is GOD!!!!!
Maybe the next time we visit Highclere we can get a glimpse of them. Thank you again!

Dear Lady Carnarvon,
I love dogs! and I love your story about your beautiful bunch of fur friends! Dogs live in the moment, love like there is no tomorrow and are such a joy to have around. I have to say your dogs have the best backyard ever!!! They can exute their energy to their greatest desire as the extended grounds of Highclere enables them to run freely. Lucky them!
Taking walks with my husky, even in the winter at minus 20 degree celcius is great, when well dressed for the temperature of course!!. It is a time to just be in the present and even to meditate. I always have to keep Jedi on a leash, because huskies will run away often, but it links me to him as we walk in sinc and I let him direct the path as he knows every streets in my neighborhood. He texts or emails! c(c ; whatever you like to think every tree or some bushes or fire fountains, but never on people’s properties to leave a mark for the next dog who will pass his path. And it is vital for him to explore and explore again. Oh I could go on and on talking about him…
We definitely share a passion for dogs. I’m always interested in hearing from them in your blog.
Thanks for sharing that today, it is just so precious!
Salutations!

I love going out with them in winter or summer – their enthusiasm for another day is so uplifting!
Dear Lovely Lady Carnarvon,
Thank you so much for sharing your precious dogs and their history with us, you have made my day. Having recently lost my beautiful 90lb daughter dog, Scarlett, I perked up at this canine delite and am quite covetous that you have a wondrous number of nine of them, I only wish. How fun! This are all truly inspirational, what a joy.
Carla Henson, Sacramento, California
Thank you – and they have all been rather good today!
Thank you so much for your blog. We too are
owned by a wonderful, if wilful Cairn Terrier, Toby. He displays the most fantastic “Cairnitude” but we wouldn’t be without him.
How funny!
Such a delightful post! Thank you for sharing your dog stories and pictures. I’m going to go home and cuddle with our Bonnie after work. Maybe I should see if I can bring her to the office with me?
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
I was so touched to meet Bella last year when I had the privilege to be chosen to join Tressa and 6 other ladies to stay in your home. Bella has had a little piece of my heart ever since then. I was especially happy to read and to see that she is still enjoying her walks in your beautiful flower gardens. Truly all of them are wonderful and so fortunate to have each other. Thank you so very much for sharing this lovely story of your very special ‘fur’ family.
She is amazing but if walks are harder, her love and spirit is still strong!
Dear Lady Carnarvon;
What a lovely post. It brought me close to tears, reminding me of our late Black Lab “BeoWoof,” who we had to put down last year at age 12. I’m sure you give all your dogs a marvellous home!
I hope it is a good place to be a dog ..
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Your dogs are beautiful! Thank you for sharing all the photos of your canine kids. It is amazing how much love and laughter dogs bring into our lives. We have two at our house whom we adore.

Hoping you have a wonderful week, dear lady.

Thank you – i love that quote – I nearly ended the blog with it…
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
What a wonderful blog, dogs bring so much happiness to our lives, I have sadly lost my three beloved dogs in the last two years, the house was so empty, that a month after the passing of my last one, we went to the dogs trust, and and adopted a gorgeous Shih Tzu, called Honey, she has a brought smiles and laughter back to the whole family, and the house is once again filled with mischief.
Regards

You had me at nine dogs, so I subscribed to your blog. We are a Lab family. I have a Yellow named Quincy, but just lost my sweet, sweet Sam. My daughter and son-in-law have six at the moment – one yellow, two chocolate and three black. My grandson and his family have two yellow, although one is really fox red, and my granddaughter and her family have a black. We love every one of them. I would love to visit Highclere some day. Maybe….
I am so sorry about your Sam
Dear Lady Carnarvon – Well, you really got me with this blog! I have a miniature wire-haired dachshund who is the love of my life. She is now 10 1/2 years old and I have already started trying to reconcile myself to the time when we must part. She has the sweetest eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed the photos you included and your lovely way of talking about your nine friends. Dogs give far more than they ask for. At one time over the years I had 6 Dandie Dinmont terriers, a Scottish breed, and in that time I had three all at once – everywhere I went in the house, there was a face! I truly appreciate your blogs and the comments from others who feel the same. Very special.
Oh mu goodness 6 Dandie Dimonts!!!
I deeply admire your kind and giving heart that celebrates the joy of having these four-legged loves as an integral part of your home… Thank you for sharing in words how great your devotion is and for showing with us the smile-inducing pictures of those beauties.
So delighted to read about your lab who loved bread. My yellow lab was a connoisseur of fresh baked bread. To the point he learned how to pull the bread drawer open so, when his nose told him a new loaf was available, he would help himself.
Thank you for your writing and for that sweet and vexing memory.
Hello!
Love this one! I now just have one dog, Lucy a 10 year old Shitzu. We are a foster failure with her 5 years ago. She was a [puppy mill momma} She had live in a cage for 5 years. Did not know grass. My Maggie, 11 years, a Basset Dalmatian, taught her how to be a dog. I lost Maggie on April 1. We still miss her everyday. I would have 9 dogs now if I could. They are all a blessing!!!
Your fur babies are wonderful.
Have a great week.

Beautiful.. Dogs are the best .. I have a yellow lab mix and he is so much a part of the family .. your pups are right where they need to be and a reunion sounds grand. ❤️simone
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Your dogs are wonderful. They look so placid. They must be very happy and well taken care of.My wife Lotty and I lost our wonderful Teddy this time 6 years ago.He was a Labrador/Collie cross. He was one on the most smart dogs we ever had. As we travel quite a lot we don’t have a dog at present, but we miss not having a dog so much.
If you need your dogs minded any time we willingly volenteer.
Best Wishes,

I think they are cuddly and some of them has less attention span than others!!
Having grown up with many animals, especially dogs, and as an adult having a variety of cats, I especially love your blogs about the animals at Highclere. May I recommend a book to you that I have just finished reading? It is called “Soul Dog, A Journey Into the Spiritual Life of Animals” by Elena Mannes. It is a wonderful read for anyone whose beloved companion animal has passed away.
Stevie and Scout (a slightly insane but much loved calico cat)
I will try the book – thank you
Lady Carnarvon I love your dogs and your blog you are a very special person I hope I get to meet you some day
Memories of four Bouvier des Flandres dogs….Four Himalayan – and two mixed breed cats …. and three children
Glorious, happy years.
Loved your blog.

I can almost feel how soft Scoobie Doo and Alfie were as puppies. Damon, my big 100 pounds of chocolate lab, was also a wee bundle of softness 7 years ago. Our salivating friends certainly weave a nice spot into our hearts. And how fortunate we are to have them with us.
Thank you for sharing your furry friends with us.
Thank you
I love reading your posts, especially the one about your dogs. Now I know I was meant to be born in England and lead a country life….there was just some mixup at the time, so I was born in Atlanta, Georgia USA! I do try to emulate the peace and quiet of the country on my small half acre of trees and bushes with my one dear doggie, Bodhi. Perhaps it’s not the geography, but the state of mind that matters. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us.
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
As a dog-lover and owner of just seven dogs, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your dog-tales today. On our first visit to Highclere in May 2016, we were the final people to depart and were lucky enough to witness Lord Carnarvon walking down the lawns with several of your dogs. Bella stood apart from the pack, nearer to the Castle, and I felt honored to capture a photo and short video of her walking in the grass. I have shared the photo with you on your Facebook page previously, but I would now like to post the video there, too.
On our third visit to Highclere (from California) in July 2018, we were happy to meet Isabella and her brown cocker spaniel, Ted, at the refreshment truck, and captured another fun photo. We cherish all of these dog-meeting moments! Thank you for writing this joyful blog.
Best Regards,
Polly Curtis
Thank you
I am almost jealous!. It must be so lovely being surrounded by so many dogs!. I would myself doing a head count quite often. We lost our golden retriever Tiny 18mths ago, only having had her for 3yrs. She was a rescue @ age 7 but she had quite few health problems. We have always had dogs & don’t imagine going for much longer without one!
They make a home and say hello!
Lady Carnarvon,

Dear Lady Carnarvon,
They day that God spelled backward is Dog. You home is full of God! I’m sure it doesn’t seem that way when the rug is wet or the floor covered in a hundred muddy pawprints.
Your family is full of love.
Enjoy all their devotion.
Such a lovely read early this morning. We have a saying at our Scottish Terrier Club: Dogs are like crisps, one is never enough.
Enjoy the love,
Agreed!
How fun to have so much love running about the place! They are such smile-bringers.
They are – you are right!
My oldest daughter and I just returned from our holiday in Great Britain last week. Highclere Castle was our first excursion and simply wonderful. I have two Labs, Lucy who is an eight year old chocolate and Jack who is a four year old black Lab. My daughter’s dog is Matilda and she is a mixed breed that was rescued from the state of Alabama. She spends the day with us while my daughter is away at work, and stayed at my house with my husband and youngest daughter while we were on holiday. I believe that dogs are wonderful companions and provide therapeutic qualities. We had a wonderful time visiting Highclere, it was like a dream. Thank you for sharing!
If I may ask who would you say if and when needed has the best heel of your pack
Freya walks to heel very well
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
The pups must have a wonderful time running around the estate! I have three wonderful dogs, the eldest is 16 years old with no signs of slowing down! My Yorkshire Terrier is just like Alfie and Scooby Doo when it comes to swimming. She thinks she’s a big dog when she’s really the size of a large bird!
Your family has such beautiful dogs. I think it’s time for the tenth pup!
Much love,

I do not know what my husband would say although it might cause much amusement!!!
Lady Carnarvon:
Well, it is about time the the doggies get their 15 seconds of fame–a blog post dedicated to them and them alone!!! This was a long time in coming and it is truly appreciated–I think your reading audience feel like we know those doggies because we see them ever so often in photos you share.
Seeing you with Bella in a wheel borrow reminds me of my neighbor who walks every day with her “little” dog, but some days on the walk back he decides that it is too much and so she has to carry him home. Lately, she acquired a stroller for him and I see her pushing him as they go for a “walk”- granted, she walks while he enjoys the ride! The problem is that going is great because the road is on a slope, but coming back is quite the workout pushing dog and stroller up hill. But, owner and dog would not have it any other way!!
Thank you for sharing all aspects of life at Highclere Castle.
Regards,
Bev
How blessed you are, Lady Carnarvon, to have so many furry friends and to have a huge expanse of land so they can sniff and roam at leisure! We bought a new house this year and the one we missed out on had a 1/2 of land out back and was fully fenced. It would have been perfect for our Yoda (a Pekingese) to have been able to roam off-leash). He now has a few dog friends, but was a shelter puppy we adopted who had a lot of issues when we first got him 12 years ago. Like your greying pups, he cries a little in winter with pain but still loves his walks, though shorter now.
Enjoy your sweet dogs and happy summer to you and your husband,

Dear Lady Carnarvon,
You have such lovely dogs. And you have such an obvious affinity with and love for them.
I have found that regardless of whether you have had a good or a bad day, your pet dog is always genuinely happy to see you and greet you with immense love and joy.
I have had the joy of three brilliant dogs as pets throughout my life, so far. “Princess”, a Corgi, was my constant companion from age 9 to 19. In Primary School she sometimes would get the inclination to walk the 2-3 miles to my school and sit on the verandah outside my classroom. After my parents installed a swimming pool, she would walk laps alongside me as I would swim them – usually being over 100 at a time.
“Honey”, was a Labrador who was probably more my father’s dog than mine – given that I was at Uni and got married. However I have many, many fond memories of her, not least how she would look up at the house each morning and thinking no one was watching would swim 4 lengths of the pool and comfortably get out at the pool steps, where she would shake herself dry.
Of course, at least one member of the household usually saw her but even if we didn’t the wet patch on the pool surrounds near the top of the steps was evidence of her swim.
Most recently there was “Bruiser”, a male Labrador who was a really great family pet. Actually he was more than a pet, he was a member of the family. There are way too many stories to tell about him, but just briefly, we think he must have been brought up with cats around him for the first 6 weeks or so of his life.
When we first brought Bruiser home, we optimistically created a type of a kitty litter box in the corner of my the downstairs rumpus room, which he used without hesitation.
Also, Bruiser is the only Labrador that I have ever known not to enjoy getting wet or going for a swim. On the odd occasion that he fell into the pool – such as when over vigorously chasing a tennis ball and not being able to stop in time – he swam like a natural. A beautifully straight back and head up. But he did not like it.
Another feline attribute was that Bruiser could climb and balance on narrow beams. Obviously he couldn’t grip with his paws or claws like a cat can, but he could jump from one thing to another and as a puppy he would often be seen walking along window ledges and such things at a height. (The meat on the BBQ never had a chance if it was momentarily left unattended.)
Actually, Bruiser became very obedient within a short time and rarely infringed on stealing food but would readily “ask” for it. He learnt to shake hands and in addition to his own initiative of greeting people with a lifted right paw he also would often raise his paw to the chef as a reminder that he was present and available to perform the duties of “official food taster”.
Bruiser also loved playing fetch but had different rules for different “players”. With me, he would return the ball or other item being thrown and readily drop it at my feet. With my daughters he would stop about a foot or so from them and drop the item, but as they bent to get it he would snatch it in his mouth and run off so that they would chase him. Other times he would fling the object so that the children had to play fetch. With my wife, he would return the item but not release it. Instead he would initiate a game of “tug of war” for the item.
On cold nights, Bruiser would sleep inside downstairs where he would stay unless he had a call of nature which would lead to him coming upstairs and licking one of our hands or faces to wake us and take him outdoors for that particular purpose. Similarly if we slept in and he considered that it was time to play, a friendly “visit” upstairs would wake one of us.
As a family we had the joy of Bruiser for over 16 years. He is buried in our backyard.
The memories are wonderful but their passing is so sad. I am not ready just yet for another but that is so obviously a personal feeling.
I wish you and all readers of this blog wonderful times of much enjoyment and delight with your pets.
Yours faithfully,
Jeffery Sewell
Oh my goodness! What a wonderful post! I love all of your pups! Thank you for taking the time to share!
It is now 1st August in Sydney and on that date Australia celebrates and recognises the day as every horses’ birthday.
So many happy returns and the best of birthday wishes to all your horses and indeed all equines everywhere.

Thank you!
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
Your love of your family, extended to the four legged family members is so inspiring and uplifting! I love waking up to your blog and feeling the love in your heart and gratitude. God Bless you and yours and thank you so very much!
Thank you!
Lady Carnarvon,
Your family of puppies is beautiful! God bless them. Oh….. the little Stella, she is a beauty. !!
She is very cute!
Thank you for sharing your darling dogs with us….is there ANYTHING more irresistable than a yellow Lab puppy?
Nothing!
Dear Lady Carnavon, it’s a great pleasure to know these wonderful dogs… We are about to adopt another dog and I’m so happy and enthusiastic. I agree with a comment just above “dogs are like crisps, one is never enough!!”
I love your blog!
My best regards,

How fun! I had nine dogs for a time as well. It certainly makes for a busy household but I so enjoyed it! We’ve lost a few over the past few years and currently have six. Each with their own personality and a gift to offer as a wonderful member of our family. I’m sure that my husband often wonders how this happened.
Lady Carnarvon,
My daughter and I met you last October when you opened your home for two days. We also met Freya and her sister when they were pups. So adorable! We have five and can’t imagine not having them! Husbands know…happy wife means happy life!
Best regards,
Tara
Thank you
I love this post! I only have two dogs, that’s all we can fit for now, but if I had my druthers I would have more! Will be visiting the castle with the Albion group on Monday, August 12. Perhaps I will see one of the dogs. If so, I always have treats in my pocket.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Lady Carnarvon,
My friend and I visited Highclere Castle, yesterday, and thoroughly enjoyed our time! I had no idea you had nine dogs until I asked one of the room attendants about the pets of the home. She and several others shared splendid stories about your sweet dogs and their escapades. As a new dog owner of a sweet Corgi, I’m VERY impressed that you have 9 dogs. Amazing! Thanks for allowing us a moment to peek into the life at Highclere Castle. It was brilliant!
It is a bit mad !
Beautiful Fur Babies.
We had a beautiful black Labrador called Rosie. Unfortunately she died age 10.
So sorry.. Bella is still here and sooooo precious
Your Ladyship,
Your dogs are great! I lost my, Sir Winston, August 30, 2018 at age 12. He was a Chihuahua and the best friend I could have asked for to be with me. I now thinking about getting another one but I will see.
I cannot imagine having 9 dogs 1 was enough to handle.
I had seen somewhere that you rent out a room through Airbnb? That would be fun to stay there especially since I am a Herbert descendant in America. I could not tell what time frames you rent. I usually am over for Royal Ascot although I did not make it over this year. In fact, how far are you from Ascot?

I think it would be lovely to have a children’s book about the dogs of Highclere Castle.

Lady Carnarvon,
Given I’m originally from Peru, I’m curious to learn if your poncho is from South America?
Take Care, -Leo
Bought here sadly!!!
Beautiful nonetheless. 🙂
Lots of good dogs you have. Is the one in the wheelbarrow the aging Labrador that is having some trouble walking but still wants to go on walks? There were nice dogs on the Downton Abbey series
including a fox hunt with dozens hounds going after the foxes with the hunters on horseback. Very good summer you are having. If you come to FL with the dogs, don’t let them swim in any fresh water area because of gators and in south FL the Python snakes! Only use a designated dog beach in the salt water areas or a dog park (for the dogs that can’t or won’t swim).
Yes, that is Bella who is quite arthritic but doesn’t want to be left behind.
Dear Lady Carnarvon,
I think you are just lovely and a great dog advocate.
Sadly many dogs lose their lives from owner neglect.
Our latest dog came to us from a rescue group that found her in downtown Los Angeles. She is a sweet senior vanilla Lab, and she was a skinny mess, with teeth that needed pulling, a growth on her lip, hip dysplasia and a mammary tumor. She was not spayed.
I guess my point is that if this can happen to a beautiful dog (and I believe they are all beautiful), how can we justify so much breeding?
Happily, animal rescue has become very popular in the United States. And for myself, I can say unequivocally that sometimes the dog that needs you most becomes the dog most loved.
Dear Lady your Dogs are lovely. I love animals all world around. Bella is rely dead in real life. If so I am deeply sorry . If not please let me know .
